No youtubes, no streaming, yet every month I use more Data. I don't have many apps. I use my phone almost exclusively.

I do visit Breitbart often, but I never click on the video. Is BB loading stuff when I am not actually on the site? Can I stop it from loading so much clutter and ads?

The sense of this bill being so out of control is bothersome. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you get a lot of email on your phone?

We need more details.

What make and model of phone?
What version or level of the operating system and patches?
What was your prior data use and what is it now?
What apps have you downloaded?

Yes, but as a percentage of data use, it is very small.

Apple 6. I’m due for an update, but have been putting it off until I can get to the storefront. Downloading it here would break the bank.

Get it checked by a pro.

You might be able to set up your router up to monitor your internet traffic. It might help to know exactly how much you used each day. Your neighbors might be hijacking your Internet. Also, change your wifi passwords for all of your devices.

I’m in the sticks. I have a 40 gig AT&T cellpone plan. One month something went weird and I used up almost all of it in just a few days. But I still had no overages because I shut down all devices except when I actually NEEDED to use data. I actually came in 1 gig under that month. But here’s what I did, and some background:

I have two phones and a Myfi liberate hotspot. the hotspot is our main data user for our desktop and laptops at home. Our nearest neighbor is 500 yards away, so that’s not an issue. The Myfi is usb connected to my laptop.

Here is what I did:

Turn off data on the Myfi.
Set Myfi usb option to “charge only”.
Turn off data on the phones.
Check myatt.com to closely monitor data usage.
When my wife needs wifi at home, she turns on the data on the Myfi, and turns it off when she’s done.

This did it for us. We also learned how easy it is to closely monitor data usage.

I do have Pinterest, one of the few completely benign apps I like. I notice that the app for tracking has me huge for news media. I’m assuming that’s Breitbart. I figure other FReepers visit this site, too, and may know how to better manage it. Should I clear history more often?

Sorry. I should have asked if it is a home network. Do you have Internet access someone other than your phone?

Please connect to WiFi to install any app or operating system updates. That will be “free.”

I think your problem is likely to be the background use of iCloud. Turn off iCloud, or limit it to only Find My Friends-sort of super minimal data use items.

On iPhones with little available memory, your phone will offload apps and data to iCloud to make room for other things. It then loads it back local to the device when you appear to need it. This churns through a lot of data, as a lot of copying keeps happening. The equivalent on a Windows computer would be virtual memory use on the hard drive.

Pinterest is heavy on graphics.

I have those little devices that I call a router though I think that’s not right. It is a mobile wifi—I leave it off most of the time. The phone is my internet now. But I don’t want to turn off the phone because I need to get calls—and the actual cell use doesn’t seem to bump up the data.

This may sound really stupid but I was having the same problem until a buddy showed me how to “kill” running apps. Turns out that I was still running everything I’d ever opened.

Bear in mind a cell phone is never off, even if you turn it “off.” The phone is always on so you can be found if you receive a call.

If the phone is “off” and you receive a call, the cell carrier senses the phone is off and transfers the call to voice mail.

Turn off your roaming data connection and only connect via WiFi.

I use my phone and tablet a lot but hardly use any of my 1GB roaming data allowance.

I’ll kill if I know how! I got rid of many apps—the Find my Friend uses surprisingly little data. I do have a weather app.
