Honestly, the only ones “running” are those you have allowed to do background processing of some sort or the one you have that is the current primary application. The rest are suspended and not running.

The full list looks alarming, but they aren’t even necessarily in active memory, any more. You also have recently used apps that are in active memory, but are completely suspended.

You really need to look at your permissions and any GPS stuff you have allowed in the background. Do you know where to look under Settings?

There is another option to reduce your data use, but it requires allowing Google to know everything you do. Google has data compression routines that will compress all web traffic you use in selected browsers when this feature is on. Opera from the App Store is one of these. In the Settings area, you can have it do maximal compression on data prior to it being sent to and from your device. That could help for bandwidth limited use.

Other downloadable browser apps have implemented this feature. I do not use it, when available, but you might want to.

When I first got my phone I found I wasn’t closing the apps properly. There should be a breakdown of usage in your data management function. Rebooting your phone will ensure all apps are closed. And, yes, video ads on Breitbart will burn up your data.

No windows 10.

I have Win7 on the laptop and desktop, but I also have ‘updates’ turned OFF.

This. I have wifi and still did this. Don’t want crap running all the time. Also close out every app after I use it. Swipe em closed.

Send/receive photos? Lots of attachments!
Updating in the background?

There is a lot of stuff going on in the background. Almost none of it is any good.

It is tough. I had a thread about rural Internet and tv for a vacation house a while back and so many had good ideas. I will try to find that thread if you didn’t see it.

What we decided was to get the Internet from the phone co, which was a pretty slow speed, and do sling.com for the tv, which you don’t pay for unless you are up there, 30 days at a time.

You may have three Internet options available in your rural area.

1. Your local phone company may have DSL that can reach your location.
2. You may have microwave available, as some grain elevators host microwave transceivers and farms within 10-15 miles can connect with a line of sight.
3. You very likely have satellite available. This appears to be a reasonable list of some satellite providers: http://www.toptenreviews.com/services/internet/best-satellite-internet-providers/

I’ve been closing down “cell” apps in settings—what else?

I found that thread!

Not reading through it to see if you posted, though. Lol. You might find other suggestions.

Go to Settings> Cellular> scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN to the end of the list, AND TURN OFF WIFI ASSIST. Chews thru data big time, even when you think you are using only wifi. Happened to me. Tripled our data use in three weeks.

Well, your “cell data” is using your Verizon router which uses cell data of its own. Do you have a separate cell data allotment from your Verizon wireless router? Anything you stop from using cell data will use your Verizon router data, so please understand this. We are simply playing with balancing two separate data limits (your phone and your Verizon wireless router).

On to more to help.

Please implement the following items from the slideshow afterward:

2. Stop your iPhone from tracking you
3. Prevent apps from uploading your data
6. Limit apps from tracking your location in the background
13. Prevent iPhone location-based tracking
14. Install a content blocker
15. Limit advertisers tracking your location, data

You can do the other slides’ recommendations, too, but those won't effect any change on data use limits.

Shouldn't that be "Tyrannis Seditio, Obsequium Deo est"?

"Ceterum censeo Hillary esse delendam."

How did your data use trimming work for you?

Do you have separate data limits for your device on the cell data network, and your Verizon wireless router? Do you have more than one device connecting to the Internet?

I'm still trying to keep track of the moving parts--turns out there was a PC download in the household I didn't know about--now I'm figuring out how to keep the computer from loading every time the wifi is on.

Thanks!
