UPDATE: NOT A V-22 OPREY

News 5’s J.B. Biunno here…

We did some homework today to figure out exactly what that loud roar was Thursday night, heard across the Gulf Coast. As we originally reported below from the Mobile Airport Authority, we were told the sound came from a V-22 Osprey, a propeller-powered military aircraft.

IMO, the V-22 makes more of a growling/ rumbling sound than a roar.

Plenty of fast movers along the Gulf Coast between what’s stationed at NAS Pensacola and Tyndall AFB.

F-35s are the loudest jets currently flying in the U.S., and they’re based out of Eglin AFB, Pensacola Florida, in the panhandle.

That’d be my guess for an unusually loud sound at night in the gulf area.

Just watched the attached video, and the crappy surveillance video is inconclusive. The side by side video isn’t much better especially since the V-22 sounds different in vertical mode than it does in horizontal flight.

Anyone who either lives between around Milton, Florida or the Jackson County area of Mississippi would have heard this noise Thursday night. I don’t know if I can link to a Facebook post but there were at last count over 700 comments and most people aren’t buying the Osprey explanation or the one the local news are trying to put out.

People from Milton Florida to where I live in Lucedale, Ms heard this loud noise that lasted 3-4 minutes and it sounded like something was about to land on our house! A lot of people all across the coast said the same thing. This noise was extremely loud and close and sustained for that amount of time. It sounded more like the space shuttle launching.

Anyway, anyone who lives in this area if you heard it please comment or if you know anyone who lives in this area please find out if they heard it and ask if they can comment here. And if you know if I can post a Facebook link I will post it so anyone interested can read other people’s comments from across the coast.

Thanks.

Are they?

What about the B-1?

Loudest I’ve ever heard in my life.

A failed valve on a gas pipeline sounds just like that. Had one let loose less than a mile from my house and it sounded like a jet fighter in full afterburner, except the sound source never moved.

The one near me never caught fire, and they got it shut down in about 45 minutes.

When I was stationedat Plattsburgh AFB, they would engine check the KC-135 tankers. These aircraft would use water injection to boost thrust. Loudest thing you ever heard. Sometimes, to troublshoot problems, they would have them running full power for literally hours.

Anyway, that’s what this noise sounds like.

B-36s flew low over my school back in the 50s. Shook the earth.

The boyz from Jacksonville practice touch-n-go landings down here at the dinky l’il Oak Island Airport with their Ospreys. They’ll carry on for a few hours sometimes circling the whole area for a coupla hours. It’s pretty noisy. But more like a chopper with a lower freq tone. Low frequency makes it “feel” louder. KnowhatImean, Vern? d;^)

But this wasn’t fast moving. I’ve lived on the coast all my life. The airport authority at Herlbert Field said it was one osprey that took off but that they didn’t know which direction it went. That whole story is bs. Then the news station decided to listen to different planes on YouTube and they decided what it was. What kind of crap is that?

Plus, how were people in Florida and Mississippi hearing this loud roar at the same time for about the same length of time? I’m sorry but something doesn’t pass the smell test on this.

Well they should have heard it. My husband and I went out side and both of us was like what the hell is that? I thought at first it was a plane crashing, and then it took so long I even wondered if we were being invaded. My husband said it sounded like a rocket or missile taking off.

We’re in the flight path for jets and helicopters from the Coast Guard in Mobile, Camp Shelby in Forrest County. We’re used to jets flying over low, and we’re used to helicopters flying low, too. Never heard anything like this. I want to know what it was. And so do a lot of other people.

I posted the links to the comments from along the coast. There were over 700 posts last night I see it’s down to around 400 today. But you can see what I mean by people saying they’ve never heard anything like this around here. Plus you can see the 2 “stories” we’ve received thus far. If you know any other freepers from the area please tag them to this.

Could it have been an USSC EA-4 making an emergency landing at Hurlburt field? The runway is 9600 ft long, certainly able to handle a EA-4 or even a -4B.
