It’s Not My Party
National Review Online ^ | July 23, 2016 | ANDREW C. MCCARTHY

Posted on 07/23/2016 7:46:56 PM PDT by Hojczyk

For these post-Reagan Republicans, conservative was passé. They needed to be “compassionate conservatives,” as if there were something vaguely inhumane about the liberty enterprise. Government was no longer the “necessary evil” envisioned by the Framers, the butt of the Gipper’s aforementioned quip. It was our beneficent guardian who “has got to move” whenever “somebody hurts.”

These Republicans doubled the national debt before Obama came along to double it again. The new and improved GOP swelled the size and scope of government; created new entitlements even as the existing ones were bankrupting us; enacted “campaign-finance reform” well aware that it flouted the First Amendment; and derided their own base as racist xenophobes for resisting amnesty for illegal aliens. And was there any Obama overreach that they weren’t happy to foot the bill for?

Take away the conservatism, the limited-government constitutionalism, the devotion to liberty, the fiscal discipline, the clear-eyed recognition of America’s enemies, and what are you left with? A Republican party whose only real boast is that it can do statism with more adult moderation than the hard Left that has captured the Democratic party. To the extent that, a generation ago, “Republican” was fairly thought synonymous with “conservative,” it thus became a party “Republican” in name only — a party in which all principles were negotiable.

That made it a party ripe to be taken over by Donald Trump. But what is now officially Trump’s party has not been my party for quite some time.

Whoever wins, I know that come January, I will be in the conservative opposition to a statist administration, and in search of a new party to call home.

A #NeverTrumper’s last lament.

If Hillary gets in, there will be nothing left to preserve.

They don’t get it at NRO.

Andrew, I can, if I try real hard, understand your position, but whom would you rather deal with, in trying to establish your Conservative Utopia? The judges seated by Trump, or Clinton?

For a REAL conservative, the choice is easy.

We had to hold our noses and vote for the likes of McCain, and these snowflakes can’t take it when an outsider gets the nomination. Screw ‘em.

Alternate title: It’s Not My Party, and I’ll Cry If I Want To.”

The National Re-Spew still can’t give it up.

If Hillary wins, they will be shut down in her first term.

They won’t have to be worried about looking for a new party.

There will be only one.

Morons.

The same national Review that fired all the conservative immigration restrictions from the staff & fired Ann Colter for being too hard on Islam. Get a clue Andy....

These jackasses have absolutely no self-awareness.

This same drama queen whining about “statism” was shrilly demanding that the federal government had the right to collect the telephone records of the entire American population. No probable cause. No particularity.

Bookmark this thread. Two years into a Trump Administration, when the economy is recovering and pride in the country growing, I can almost guarantee McCarthy will be saying, “You know, a lot of people don’t remember this, but I was with Trump all the way.”

It’s how these people operate.

Who cares what Andrew McCarthy thinks? He isn’t a leader in the conservative movement. He was a prosecutor on terrorism. The primary is over!

Do us a favor and suffer in silence.

Wouldn't that be great? In some sense though I can relate to the fact that the Republicans haven't been my party for a long time. They have been the go-along-to-get-along party as opposed to a true opposition party for quite a long time now. Trump is the only indication that the Republicans might actually become a true opposition party to the Democrats, and its about damn time.

It was NEVER ‘his party’ - it was, and is, OUR PARTY - the 14 MILLION of us that voted for Trump.

I seriously think that the Dems are TROLLING that site, considering the non-stop comments attacking Trump.

As stated by many here, Trump has to defeat the GOPe, the media, the DNC and then Hillary.
All four may be a bridge too far. Five, if I am correct that the RNC would really prefer Hillary win.

Trump’s statements in the aftermath of the Turkey failed/choreographed coup were incorrect. Shoebat fleshes this out. I wonder who is responsible for advising Trump on Middle East affairs? Does anyone know?
