George Harrison's estate: Trump's use of 'Here Comes the Sun' is 'offensive'
Entertainment Weekly ^ | 7/22/15 | Jessica Goodman

The Beatles’ beloved Abbey Road song “Here Comes the Sun” was played at the 2016 Republican National Convention Thursday as Ivanka Trump took the stage, and late Thursday night, George Harrison’s estate slammed Republican nominee Donald Trump for using the song, calling the act “offensive” and “against the wishes of the George Harrison estate.” (Harrison wrote the track.)

“The unauthorized use of #HereComestheSun at the #RNCinCLE is offensive & against the wishes of the George Harrison estate,” Harrison’s estate’s official Twitter account posted.

The account then followed up and joked that maybe another one of Harrison’s songs would have better suited the Republican National Convention: “If it had been Beware of Darkness, then we MAY have approved it! #TrumpYourself.” (“Beware of Darkness” appears on Harrison’s solo album All Things Must Pass.)

I wonder if the estate actually owns the copyright still.

I don't know if they do or not.

http://variety.com/2016/music/news/george-harrison-estate-partners-with-bicycle-music-company-1201680368/

This article in Variety states that: "Music publisher the Bicycle Music Company has entered into an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with the Estate of George Harrison, the company announced." and "Bicycle, a subsidiary of Concord Bicycle Music, will administer Harrison songs ranging from “Something,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” originally recorded with the Beatles, to solo material like “My Sweet Lord” and “Stuck Inside a Cloud,” in addition to his Traveling Wilburys hit “Handle With Care.”

Does that mean the estate sold the rights to the songs? It is not clear to me.

There is a huge amount of overdose deaths within music or deaths that resulted from long term drug use.

It occurs in acting as well, but doesn’t seem to be quite as frequent as it is within music.

I’m not sure why this is either.

I am a former heavy drug user, and I also used to be a drawing artist when i was much younger.

It was my experience that drug use actually kills imagination and creativity.

I am a big fan of George Harrison’s music. But Trump or the RNC used the music within the terms of the license. That’s all there is to it - if the Harrison estate wants to personally vet the politics of everyone who might happen to like George’s music, they can go to court to make his music available under another license which gives them that authority.

I think they do:

Harrisongs wikipedia article.

Harrison's earlier songs for the Beatles are part of the Northern Songs package that Michael Jackson owned for a while, but Harrison hated the Northern Songs contract and set up his own publishing rights company before writing and recording songs like "Here Comes the Sun" with the Beatles.

well, here is my theory. By nature a musician or entertainer seeks, above all else, acceptance. That acceptance in the peer community entails drug use. If you don’t, you are rejected and shunned as a “loser”. These people have little real discernment of anything but self and getting high. High on music or high on drugs. They are not particularly intelligent. They have high aptitude in what they do.
I admire your maturity, I too made many mistakes. many.

Why Queen & George Harrison’s Estate Probably Can’t Sue Over Having Their Songs Played At RNC

https://consumerist.com/2016/07/22/why-queen-george-harrisons-estate-probably-cant-sue-over-having-music-played-at-rnc/

Thank you, Thank you!

"In response, the RNC countered that its use was covered by blanket performing rights licensing agreements it had made with organizations like ASCAP and BMI. Basically, as long as the songwriters get paid for their songs being used, there’s not much they can do about the RNC hiring a band to play the tunes."

That article deserves its own thread. Would you like to post it? If not, do you mind if I do?

That is exactly why I started using drugs at the age 16.

Acceptance. 8-9th grade I was the fat kid, people loved to bully me.

10th grade I lost 100 lbs, beat up the main bully, then started using drugs. Everyone accepted me then, lots of friends, I was cool, you know.

It’s funny though, these things that make you cool when you are a young person also make you an outcast as an adult.

That which earned you acceptance then will earn you rejection now.

And of course, if those behaviors get too far out of control, they can end your life, then you don’t have to worry about these kinds of things any longer.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. If the Harrison Family doesn’t want someone to use George’s music, it shouldn’t have sold the rights.

It is awesome that Trump doesn’t care. I love that about him.

His greatest strength is that he doesn’t care about, and is willing to fight against, political correctness. He doesn’t back down.

Well since Citizens United the left has been insisting that corporations aren’t people. In that case, estates aren’t people either.

The venue needs to have a ‘public performance’ license...odds are this convention center did.

This link gives some specific instances, in which an artist can protest...I don’t think playing a song one time fits any of these instances.

So, Harrison estate, tough.

Yes, I am commenting on this particular statement here at FR, but I find that I no longer bother to get irritated or annoyed when brain dead celebrities issue their daily statements of outrage, or call those they disagree with every name in the book. They are just background noise. Who takes any of them seriously? They are so lame, trite and predictable in everything they do and say.

You’re right! But George Harrison is dead (Memory Eternal!).

The “owners” of the “estate” are just making a stink because they don’t like Trump—it has nothing to do with any monetary consideration. Fortunately, Trump has been ignoring all these bogus objections.

Meanwhile, there is a WikiLeaks issue with the Democratic National Committee—how their primary was rigged just like Bernie and Trump said. Now there is a whole stream of Tweets from people wanting to “exit” the Dim party. That is a lot more substantive.

If he was ignoring them then he'd still be playing the songs. He isn't.
