MACY’S FIRES CATHOLIC FOR HIS BELIEFS

Macy’s has fired an employee because he is a practicing Catholic. The case is now before the New York State Division of Human Rights.

In May, Javier Chavez, Senior Store Detective at the Macy’s store in Flushing, New York, received a phone call stating that a male had entered the ladies room with a female companion. A female customer, and her daughter, were afraid to enter because of the male’s presence. A security employee who reports to Chavez advised the man to leave and use the men’s room. He left claiming to be a female. He then complained to store officials that he was asked to leave.

Chavez was subsequently told by an Assistant Store Manager that certain males can use the ladies restroom. This was news to him. A few days later, an Assistant Security Manager told him that transgender persons can use the bathroom of their choice. He said he had just become aware of this policy, stating that it was contrary to his religion and the Bible. But he hastened to say that he would nonetheless enforce Macy’s policy.

“After my employer learned that I was a practicing Catholic, with religious concerns about this policy,” Chavez says in his formal complaint, “I was terminated because of my religion, in violation of the New York State Human Rights Law.”

The most basic religious right is the right to believe; if conscience rights can be vitiated, the First Amendment means nothing. Macy’s has no legal, or moral, grounds to stand on. For merely holding beliefs that are contrary to the store’s policy, Chavez was fired. This is what totalitarian regimes do, not American commercial establishments.

Macy’s, Target, Chase, Paypal, Starbucks, UPS . . .will probably save the average person money if they quit doing business with them. I’m not using my Chase cards or paypal because of their stand on Trump. No UPS either if I can help it. . .and I do like the driver, a very professional employee.

I remember the last time I was there and looking at some blouses I asked this one clerk who I found out later was the manager, anyway I asked what the price was and she replied “These ones”” - yeah, those ones. Sheesh.

Macy’s had a BIG sign up #With Orlando or some such bullshit at all the doors. It was right after the Bangladesh attack, so I asked “why not Bangladesh?? That’s the most current attack”
Did not go over well.
I only duck in there to use the restrooms.

If he was a Muslim, would they have fired him? One standard for all.

Yes I know, Islam is a socio-political system disguised as a religion, but until that is recognized and codified, one standard, please.

He'll be working whether or not you use them, unless thousands of others join in boycotting them and he's not senior enough to avoid being laid off.

"...nor the free exercise thereof."

Simple language. But 'simple' seems not to be in most Lib's vocabulary.

Post #9 ~ Nostalgic memories of the Herald Square (flagship) Macy’s location :

As a wee lad, I occasionally took the ‘A’ train to Macy’s in Manhattan. Upholstered seats, old-time fans, and straps in every car.(the origin of the word ‘straphanger’)

No graffiti, no foul language, and woe to the man who declined to offer his seat to a woman! A feeling of community, smiling faces, and NO sense of fear.

One more from memory lane : Each time we travelled into NYC it was a MUST that we visit the Horn & Hardarts Automat! Those days may be gone, but not yet forgotten. :^)

I just shredded my wife’s Macy’s charge. She isn’t happy since I destroyed her Target account also.

Kohl's and J.C. Penney have problems, too. Looks like she's shopping at Sears!

POST #29 ~ We keep sinking lower and lower and lower and..... ~

I meant to say ISIS is sinking lower; but I do agree, we (USA and the entire world) are sinking lower right behind the moslems. SAD!

My family is from Italy.

My aunt would take us once a year to the Plaza for tea time. We’d tour the Macy’s windows and other sites. She was an interior decorator from Venice Italy so she had the heavy accent. Just making a picture for you.

I felt so special in that tea room.

I wonder if the Plaza still does that Tea time. The best deserts! This was back in the ‘70s I guess not as long ago as your story. Thank you for that!!!

The guy didn’t do anything that deserved that. The store was just deathly afraid that he might do something, because he’s Catholic. What do you expect from a store whose logo is the communist star on a red background?

I know the story behind the red star but it still creeps me out since it’s the same icon for Russia/USSR.

You and me both!
I cringed every time I saw the Macy's Star.
Only time I ever shopped in one was when the local store pulled out and was disposing of their mdse at bargain prices.

clothing is much cheaper elsewhere

History...
once upon a time, Macy’s challenged the California property tax law... because it was charging Macy’s five times what it charged Macy’s direct competitor in the same shopping mall
(explanation available but not necessary to the point here)

the case was coming up for trial ...and it looked reasonably likely that Macy’s would win... which could have had the consqeunce of overturning California’s new property tax system (Prop. XIII)

at that point, a number of Macy’s customers wrote in cancelling their nice little red Macy’s charge plates....explaining that they would be unable to afford patronizing an expansive store like Macy anymore if Macy’s litigation resulted in their losing their Prop. XIII tax reduction/subsidy/call it what you will

property tax goes up, shopping at MACY in particular goes down

Macy management ordered Macy’s lawyers to withdraw the suit.

.........
now if Macy follows Target in letting horny old men into the ladies’ room....... and if Macy keeps firing Christians..... one can only wonder if many something like the above historic event ... might recur? Maybe consumers do, occasionally, have some influence...???? or?
