According to the Toronto Sun, the NFL is planning on inserting customized data chips into game balls for the 2016 preseason, beginning next month, and for Thursday Night Football regular-season games. The Sun reports that narrowing the goalposts could be one of the results from this experiment. Our emails and calls to the league for confirmation weren't immediately returned.
With a data chip embedded in the game balls, the league's front office could gauge how close each made field goal measures through the uprights. The NFL could also estimate how many kicks would be missed if the uprights were closer together. This comes after kickers made a whopping 84.5 percent of their field goal attempts last season, seemingly spelling that the extra three points might be too easy for teams right now and thus prompting a change.

But with Patriot balls disappearing into other rooms pre-game, should be able to track where the Patriots' employee who labeled himself "the Deflator" (McNally) would smuggle those pre-game balls into...even if Brady continues to toss future cell phones away in order to continue covering up convos with "the Deflator" McNally (and/or Jastremski)...

No they shouldn’t. The target should be smaller. Automatic success on a largely uncontested play is boring, boring is bad for sports.
I don’t think its a GPS tracker... it would have to be way more accurate than that. Probaby a transponder for an emitter/receiver in the goal posts themselves.

It’s only 3 grams, given that their allowed variance is 40 grams (410-450) it won’t have any functional change. They are just playing football. They just want to do it better.
And yet a million people a week pay big bucks to watch it live and millions more watch at home. So maybe, just maybe, you’re full of crap and it’s a lot of fun. Just a thought.

Nah. An RFID transponder weighs about 1/100th of an ounce. It would respond to a signal from a transmitter somewhere in the end zone...or perhaps at the top of either goal post.

Nope. They’ve specifically said it will not monitor pressure. And given how small the device is and where they’re putting it I believe them. Actually that’s a mistake on their part they actually SHOULD monitor the pressures.
84% is meaningless unless distance is factored in.
Well, it will be interesting to see. If it does not contain its own power (battery mass) then it could be pretty small. An RFID type of device would be the way to go. Passive responder. Fun stuff.
