Day one of the 2016 tour finished right at Omaha Beach in Normandy France. With the 70th anniversary of "D" Day coming this week the message of remembrance is a stark contrast to the condition of our world today.

Well said.

I think much of the reason pro cycling isn't of bigger interest in America is that so few people understand the intricacy of the sport and the tactics and strategies involved.

In regards to spectatorship, we are more of a stadium society and bike races are pretty hard to watch (except for crits). There's also the fact that American TV has found the sponsor/viewer niche required to put more races on TV. Even if they did the time involved to watch and learn would probably put many folks to sleep. I'm that way with soccer. I've tried to watch a couple of matches at the highest level like World Cup and couldn't endure more than about 5 minutes. Also, the attempts to popularize cycling through movies like Breaking Away were pretty damn bad, in my opinion.

Looking at brands of bikes and equipment, there seems to be a lot of interest and a growing market, but I can't tell if it is translating to more actual riders and whether they are local competitors and aggressive recreational riders, or commuters who ride 15 -20 miles a day and can afford stylish gear.

Any idea where I can watch any kind of replay of today’s race, stage 9? Idiot Dish TV DVR programming cannot seem to hand when a program moves to a different channel.

I went to live TV an 8:30 Pacific, and the race was already over.

Good points all. I’ve never been a serious rider.....could seldom afford good equipment, and didn’t have the nerve to ride in heavy traffic when I could.

Oops, I mean today’s stage 8, of course. Stage 9 in Sunday.

No I don’t. Sometimes a replay is done but I don’t see any listed on todays tv schedule.
Froome took off at the peak of the last climb and never looked back. Led all the way
down the descent.

Went to watch Stage 8 today and NBC Sports was running the Mecum Auto Auctions all day and the TdF wasn’t running on any of the high channels. No TdF rerun late tonight either.

Total bummer.

******************

Mecum auto auctions was listed on the tv guide but I watched the TDF from 8 to 12 noon.
The tv guide was wrong. It shows the TDF stage 9 on tomorrow, July 9 from 6:30 am unitl 12:30pm.

Here in Fayetteville, NC they were showing the auction.

Had it on channel 50 while I was searching the guide to see if the TdF was on a higher channel.

CBS does the same thing with Survivor in March. Preempted for basketball but at least they bump Survivor up to IIRC channel 118.

I watched it on Time Warner Cable here in Burlington from 8 to 12 noon. The tv listing had
the auction listed but the station was showing the TDF. The auction is now on or was as I’m
now watching the golf channel.

NBC Network carries the tour on the weekends. It came on this morning at 6AM PST. I think it will go back to the sports channel for a replay late this afternoon.

When the sports channel does the coverage, most of it is racing, interviews and commentary. The network was pitiful with about 10 minutes of commercials every 4 or 5 minutes until the last 15k. i really didn't watch much until the en. So, I don't have much to say about strategies that may have played out.

All I know is Quintana was shadowing Froome through the last climb and Froome made a break at the top gaining about 15 seconds during a 10 mile down hill run to the finish. Quintana was in the chase group of 12 riders and at the end I didn't see his name at all. I'll look for news on the tour website.

Froome is in Yellow - big mountains tomorrow.

My cable schedule doesn't show a replay scheduled on either NBC network affiliate or the sports channel.

This goes to what I was saying about sponsors and networks no finding a niche for cycling with American audiences.

Thanks, I saw it. I’m surprised more don’t respond as much as they get
surrounded during those climbs when they aren’t moving fast.

I saw Renshaw dropped out too (Cavendish’s lead-out man). What’s the story there?

All I heard was that he got sick overnight. That usually doesn’t go back to food, because their specially prepared meals are rarely altered and they don’t just hit a restaurant.

Last year in the Giro Italia (I think) a spectator jumped in with his bike and tried to join the peloton for a while. I think the crash he caused took down a couple dozen riders.

In the Albuquirky area, we got Stage 8 on our local NBC affiliate. All other stages were on NBCSN. Thankfully, our DVR picked it up, Sagan's race up the hill, and his descent were simply amazing.
