NEW YORK (AP) -- Nearly every day, somewhere in the country, the Stars and Stripes was lowered to half-staff last year in one of the most significant official gestures of mourning and respect, an Associated Press analysis found.
The centuries-old practice can be a visible, public answer to extraordinary loss, as when more than four dozen people were killed last month at a gay nightclub in Florida.

I think it was overused in New Jersey when Chris Christie ordered the flags lowered to half-staff when Whitney Houston died.
Actually, that would appropriately represent the death of the United States and the Constitution at the hands of the current administration.
This admin purposely subverts and cheapens every American tradition possible.
Yes when it was lowered for a drug addled sista
And the purposeful ignoring of American tradition.
Yep. For every rap star or Hollyweird person. A minute of silence in Congress for that pedophile Michael Jackson.
Consider it being staff to mourn the self-destruction of a once great country instead. Yes, it happens too often.
Tennessee just lowered it for two days to honor Lady Vols head coach Pat Summit. Loved Pat, but I agree, the flag is being lowered too much.
He commented on the pin in a television interview Wednesday and then again on Thursday at a campaign appearance in Independence, Iowa.
My attitude is that Im less concerned about what youre wearing on your lapel than whats in your heart," he told the campaign crowd Thursday. "You show your patriotism by how you treat your fellow Americans, especially those who serve. You show your patriotism by being true to our values and ideals. Thats what we have to lead with is our values and our ideals.

“I think it was overused in New Jersey when Chris Christie ordered the flags lowered to half-staff when Whitney Houston died.”
Tell me that’s a joke.
Please.
.
Yes.
It’s become like ‘everyone gets a trophy.’
“Every death gets a flag lowering.”
2 words. Whitney Houston.
YES!
Yes. Next question?
Bump, you called it right!
Since 9/11, It is actually rare that is isnt at half-staff.
And YES it is being pathetically miss-used.
When I was a kid it was a HUGE DEAL when it was. It meant something really bad happened. Stuff like the Challenger explosion, or when Nixon died.
Now its done for pop stars.
YES.
AND YES.
The hero-worship of sports and entertainment is totally over the top.
Sadly it's becoming more of a problem in that it's increasingly difficult to consider flags -- whether at half-staff or not -- as symbols of respect and honor or country instead of political props and tools of propaganda.
I stopped flying it at half staff at the direction of State or Federal officials years ago.
I do it for whoever and whatever reason I feel is appropriate.
Now, I believe it is done to keep us in a perpetual state of weakness, victimhood, and mourning.
I’m not doing it. Just not doing it.
