Microsoft has been forced to change the red "x" notification on its Windows 10 upgrade prompts after users reacted angrily to the misleading button.
Microsoft dispensed with the historical function of the red "x" in the upgrade prompts to instead use it as authorisation for the upgrade process; clicking the button meant users gave their consent for the upgrade to take place.
But backlash from users over the perceived trickery has pushed Microsoft to pledge to modify the button back to its original function.
Now, clicking the "x" will dismiss the upgrade prompt and won't initiate the Windows 10 download, Microsoft Windows and devices chief Terry Myerson said in a statement.
"Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we've received feedback that some of our valued customers found it confusing," Myerson said.

I had already decided to stick with Win7 and forego Win10 before reading this thread but it’s absolutely cemented now. I will soon, within a year, be dual booting with Win7 and Ubuntu. Everything I do in windows I can do in Linux so why not. I just have to make sure there’s a driver for my printer available in Linux.
I love the way the dude characterizes it..
A new “upgrade experience”...
Like the eff they didn’t know what the eff was happening when it first rolled out!
Microsoft will use the spyware on Windows 10 to sell information about you and other users to anyone who will buy.
They are despicable dirtballs (and I am being kind on this beautiful summer morning).
“Why is it so important to Microsoft that we switch?”
The cost of supporting legacy operating systems is huge. Most Software companies cannot afford to support more than two versions of any app.
My laptop upgraded to win 10 by itself but I gave it a try. It was awful. Fortunately I was able to get it back to 7.x.
When I wasn’t looking my computer automatically updated to Windows 10. The new “Edge” browser doesn’t work at all and, of course, all links go to Edge. Now I have to copy and paste into Internet Explorer. Tried everything to fire up Edge but nothing works. They shove their new product at you, and apparently it’s not ready for public consumption. Frustrating!

Thanks to Utilizer for the ping!!
Unfortunately, your experience is all too common. Sorry for your trouble.
I’m on Win 7 forever. Updates are turned off and I have GWX10 running. M$FT can take a giant leap.
IMHO, a class action lawsuit against M$FT should be filed. I’d gladly get on board.
“Never 10” works. It stopped Win-10 from trying to access my 3 machines.
if you hear of a classaction against msft, lemme know
Over 30 years experience. Use GWX Control Panel Stand Alone on all my clients. Works great and is easily reversible.
In exactly the same way as crossing the street and getting run over by a bus is confusing.
Supporting 3 versions is expensive. Trying to alleviate the mistake of putting out so many versions so quickly.
That'll probably become the new defense in rape trials. "Hey, I didn't charge her, so what's the problem?"
Gigantic BUMP!
I'll try.
Consider joining dayglored's Windows Ping list by FReepmailing him. I sure something as hugh as a class action against M$FT would grab his attention and he would ping us.
Easy fix: don’t use an administrative user. Windows 10 requires admin rights to upgrade. If you use a non-admin account on your system, you won’t be pestered.
This is how OSX and Linux work. People like Windows for its convenience without realizing that they run as an admin natively. Try changing that. It doesn’t take much effort.
And... that deserves another “bump”!
I am now beginning to see systems in need of work that already have Win10 installed, and unfortunately there does not seem to be an easily-utilized ( :) ) method to “downgrade” the machines to Win 7xx or even *cough* to Win 8xx.
This is not a “good” thing...
*snort!*
I am fairly certain that a class-action suit of this magnitude would generate quite a bit more interest than what would of necessity arise merely from the ‘doze camp! It could spread to other OS’s as well!
You are warned...
