I think the idea is that the jock version of you will be smarter than the couch potato version of you. And, if one has the ability, I don’t know how dumb it is to make millions playing a game for a few years rather than sitting through college and then spending decades slaving away at a desk job for peanuts. In some ways those “dumb jocks” might be smarter than the dummies in the stands who make them rich.

In the past, up until about 1900, most people were required to do sufficient exercise to trigger this, simply to live.

Jefferson thought that daily exercise was necessary for a healthy mind.

Lots of very smart people exercise. Being a “jock” is not necessary to exercise, not is the optimum level mentioned. It may be that the optimum level is far below that required of professional, or even high school level atheletes.
