According to legend, Freddy did 5 years in a Texas prison for a handful of marijuana.

I have always liked that song (and many more), although I had not heard it for awhile.
Thanks for posting the link and the trip down memory lane.

***************

Freddy, Baldemar Garza Huerta, did do some time in the brig off and on while in the
Marine Corp before being discharged as a private E-1. He later spent about three
years in LA State Pen, Angola, after being convicted of possession of marijuana in
Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gov. Jimmy Davis helped get him released early.

Underappreciated talent.

Freddy Fender was also great teamed up with Doug Sahm and keyboardist Augie Meyers (rock group Sir Douglas Quintet), and Tejano accordion legend Flaco Jimemez, in the Texas Tornados.

Freddy Fender is not his real name. He's really Carlos Carburetor.

When I was a wee lad I thought Freddy Fender was the namesake of Fender musical instruments.

I lived two blocks from Freddy Fender during the last years of his life. Would pass him in morning drive to work. He was walking his dogs. Always regretted not stopping and thanking him for his music.
