Baton Rouge mother should be praised, not arrested for punishing 3 sons caught burglarizing a house

A Baton Rouge mother who took the law into her own hands after catching her three sons breaking into a house shouldn't be facing criminal charges — she should be applauded.

Free Schaquana Evita Spears.

The 30-year-old single parent finds herself — at least for now — fighting the law because she had the audacity to hold three of her children accountable for their actions. Learning that her sons — aged 10, 12 and 13 — had broken into a neighbor's house and stolen a hoverboard and some electronics, Spears left work to administer her own version of corporal punishment.

In plain speak; she gave her boys a whupping.

Her brand of parenting justice was repeatedly striking the boys with an RCA cord, typically used to run audio and video from one electronic device to another. The problem, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, is she went too far. The 13-year-old had lacerations, with some bleeding, on both arms and red welt marks pretty much everywhere from the shoulders down. The two other boys, per the arrest report, also had minor wounds.

She was booked on child cruelty counts but has since bonded out of jail. Her arrest set off a social media firestorm, with an overwhelming majority of commenters saying the mother deserves a medal, not a rap sheet. One local attorney said he would represent her free of charge.

It may not come to that. District Attorney Hillar Moore is reviewing the case, but doesn't seem inclined to prosecute.

"Surely you would expect a parent to discipline a child who is burglarizing other people's homes as this could be a deadly encounter for the child," Moore told The Advocate's Maya Lau.

No doubt, the severity of the injuries, especially on the 13-year-old, is troubling, and the line between

I imagine the 13 year old got the worse because he was the ring leader.

If this lady did not do anything she would have been called a bad parent. So she did do something and she is still called a bad parent.

Catch 22.

Too bad the homeowner didn’t just take a shotgun to them.

Hopefully she’ll dish out some more punishment once the fuss dies down, and those kids will never think of stealing again. That’s a mother doing what she needs to do - disciplining her children. Far too many parents these days won’t.

My dad left bloody welts on my legs on more than one occasion. I actually deserved them a couple of times.

If there were more parents like this lady, we’d have far fewer young men in prison.

As a teen, my older brother was caught in a group stealing a car that belonged to someone they new, for a joy ride.

They police were not involved, but our Dad somehow found out about it.

I was just a toddler, but I remember the sounds coming from upstairs of that bit of justice being administered. That night, avoiding criminal behavior was one of the first lessons I learned!

She should be applauded and given an award for parenting. The boys were very lucky this time. If the homeowner had been at home she would be crying over her boys instead of trying to discipline them. To arrest her is ridiculous.

Her six children, who have been taken from her by child services...

Talk about bastards who need a whipping...

Hopefully this “lesson” will prevent the young boys from becoming Bubba’s Bitches in prison.

Spanking, yes; to the extent of bleeding injures — that’s assault.

RCA cord is the wrong tool.

It’s usually not a good idea to administer discipline while angry. Cool off, then administer. It also give the kids time to think about what’s coming.

sorry I am all for parents spanking a child but using a power cord and leaving lacerations no wonder the kids behavior was out of whack. I am just guessing but I bet that parent was never consistent with parental punishment and when she finally did punish her children it had more to do with the kids annoying her then correcting behavior... I am guessing that there is a lot more wrong with her parenting then just brutalizing her kids.

I also imagine the punishment she doled out would do more to put her kids on the right path, instead of the nothing the courts probably would have meted out.

For accidents like a ball through a window— spanking. For a felony, like burglary, RCA cable is fine.

Reality is that the culture has changed, and corporal punishment is no longer permitted. “Single mother with six kids” would seem to me to be the beginning of the problem.

It may save him from shotgun blas6t to the chest.

The human race has survived worse corporal punishment.

I doubt she intended to open wounds but I’m not going to condemn her for giving the kid a beating.
