Barry Goldwater knew he was going to lose. Does Trump?
National Post ^ | June 17, 2016 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 06/17/2016 8:54:28 AM PDT by rickmichaels

When in his 1964 GOP acceptance speech Barry Goldwater declared that “extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,” a reporter sitting near journalist/historian Theodore White famously exclaimed: “My God, he’s going to run as Barry Goldwater!”

Six weeks into Donald Trump’s general election campaign, Republicans are discovering that he indeed intends to run as Donald Trump. He has boasted that he could turn “presidential” — respectful, respectable, reticent, reserved bordering on boring — at will. Apparently, he can’t.

GOP leaders who fell in line behind Trump after he clinched the nomination expected, or at least hoped, that he would prove malleable, willing to adjust his more extreme positions and tactics to suit a broader electorate.

Two problems. First, impulse control: Trump says what he actually feels, whatever comes into his head at any moment. Second, a certain logic: Trump won the primaries Sinatra-style, his way — against the odds, the experts and the conventional rules. So why change now? “You win the pennant,” Trump explained, “and now you’re in the World Series — you gonna change?”

In 1964 there were only 3 networks, each city had at most 2 newspapers, there were 3 political weekly magazine and 2 pop culture magazines (Look and Life). All pretty much lined up with the same point of view.

At the time, the American voters trusted their politicians, they trusted the news anchors and they trusted the various magazines.

In 1964 they actually believed they had a voice in how the nation was run. In other words, they were naive.

It is now 2016 and the free pass that politicians have been riding on has expired.

The American people no longer trust the major institution, from political office to news outlets, to even large businesses. It would seem all were conspiring against middle Americans, the average Joe that just wants to work, take care of their families and put away a little for their future.

Donald Trump is speaking for them.

If Trump would moderate his message, even a little, the cries of “flip flop” and “hypocrisy” would escape from the lips of every liberal.

I hope Trump does not give an inch.

I for one do not want any bi-party unity because it always means the little guy gets shafted.

I am up for re-writing the Constitution. Provided we can force the Fed Gov back into it’s restrictions. Say, as an act of good faith. We don’t need a new one if we can get it to restrain itself as intended. If it won’t obey this one who believes it will a new one.

Of course we could try to out think the libtards. Go ahead and let them have a wet dream new constitution and then immediately demand the gummint not abide it. Of course, our gummint refuses to listen to us NOW. I can not see anyway short of massive bloodshed that it will in the future so there it is.

Daily it seems he swings from Machiavellian genius to can’t wipe his ass moron

Excuse me? Compared to Bill Clinton's dishrag?

You've fallen for the trap. Every time Trump says something that doesn't fall in line with the MSM approved line, they go apes**t and castigate him.

Seen anything like that with Hillary's continuing lies about her FBI investigation? The money she's taken from American enemies? The traitors and seditionists she hires to surround her?

Nope. You don't. That's on purpose. She could advocate dismembering babies (oh wait: she does) and the MSM would say nothing.

If Trump so much as misses a verb, it will be amplified as Oh No This Man is Evil.

So you've fallen for the trap.

Don't.

Man they have been trying to undermine Trump from day one. Of course they have wildly underestimated him too and continue to do so...

Let’s see. Certainly if I am smart enough to know that if he even whispers one more time about concessions to libtards on firearms he is toast. Even a whisper that the MSM can misconstrue as such.

Dear Dr. Kraut: Losing is anathema to Trump. Have you ever read any of his books, Charles?

“I’m betting that this will change as the election gets near and he picks the VP.”

Do you think Reagan would have won without George H.W. Bush?

I half wonder if this might be the case here, that in order to get stronger support from the GOP he would have to get such an evil RINO attached to the ticket.

Krautyammer was impressed with Obama in 2008. He probably voted for him. Krautyammer is a smug Washington Cartel Elitist.

We’ll see. He might have to pick someone like Newt to get all republicans on board. It will have to be someone with a strong name id who is respected by most republicans.

Yes. I frequently agreed with Krauthammer before this. I didn’t start out a Trump person, but I am now. I rarely listen to Dr K’s commentary these days.......it sounds like he WANTS Hillary! to win and Trump to lose. Wake up, Charles! Hillary! will be sooooo much worse than Trump!

This weeks talking point has evidently been distributed to the Journ-O-listas.

All the turds are parroting the line this week that Trump is simply 'not electable.'

Sorry, your worn-out Jedi mind tricks are not going to work this cycle.
