Why do I Enjoy Firearms?
The South Carolina Chapter held a raffle. I never win raffles, however, I still contributed to the cause. I won a Rem 700 n .270. Yeah, no kidding.
Upon returning home, I completed a transfer request per IL law. A week later I was at a range all by myself with a cardboard box. I asked for help and instruction and spent the rest of the day shooting.
Over the next few months I spent every Sat AM out there. I took additional classes from a great family team consisting of an ex Chicago cop who was told by his wife to change jobs after three shootouts.
He did leave the force and became a lawyer specializing in defending 2A self defense shooters. He now trains USCG. His son was in the academy at the time and managed all the weapons.
They had a fine selection of side arms in all flavor of revolvers and semis. We got to shoot them all to find out strengths. Their approach to training focused on the act of shooting for self protection and introduced a verification for me of right and wrong. Right and wrong are self evident. Anyway, I enjoyed it and got pretty good at it. I've expanded the number of people in our family that know how to shoot.
My last training was so sweet, plinking steel at 75 yards vs. daughter and losing!
So here's my reasons why learning and enjoying fire arms for what they can do, but only upon my direction.
Self control Self discipline Self analysis Self criticism Engineering Science! Fun!
Most every one will understand these traits and how they improve you as a person. Finally, the training my daughter and I have received from SWAT members, Marines, local PD at our Gun Club has proven the wisdom of knowing I can defend myself and my family.

I know the feeling and it is sweet.
When the student can outdo the teacher, it’s a proud day for both.
If you’re only going to have one hunting rifle in one caliber, .270 is a hell of a choice IMHO. Congrats.

Colorado living has also been good. Major attitude change from IL.
Here, people yak at breakfast about their shooting range or a new shotgun.
Reloading is a great teacher.
If it weren’t for that horrible boat accident...
I did hit a water melon at 400 yds bit it took a while. Once.
Now take the next step and learn Reloading. It is most satisfying shooting ammunition that you created yourself. And you’ll save money too.
I liked Colorado, long time ago; living was a little expensive for me there back then, but lots of attractive girls...lots and lots. :)
Liked the hunting in Wyoming even better. Good place to disappear. Cancel the lots of beautiful available women, though. Cancel decent Chinese food. Nice people. Lots of places to get away from any evidence of man.
Montana, things get a little high again, beautiful place to live if you have all your ducks in a row. But you start to get these high altitude liberals who have had their noses in the stratosphere too long.
Had a traveling medical job that took me Rockies to the PNW back in the day. You’re in hunting heaven.
Have fun. Have a 3 day emergency bag if your vehicle gets stuck. If you can’t find the antelope or mountain sheep you like in MT I know a heck of an area WNW of Laramie ;)
I hit a wine bottle at 80 yds. on my first shot with my son’s Ruger .357. He was amazed, I was shocked but acted like it was no big deal. He wanted a repeat but I declined due to the high cost of ammunition and all.
My reasons;
I want potential tyrants to fear gun owners, a group I help in inflating the #’s.
Self defense comes next.
Hunting, target work and plinking fill out the balance.
I am a gun accumulator, not a collector, though many are.
I’m 64 and have been around guns since 5-6 years old and later in the Army. Now I take my grandkids shooting.

I reloaded so much back in 2011 when you could still buy bricks of primers and jugs of powder at sane prices.
Still have some “Rammo” left in both 9 and .45. Perhaps .38Sp or 357 is next.
I went with Hornady and got the auto feeders for brass and lead parts.

I do consider NOT joining the Military my big mistake in life. Marines wanted me for electronic communications. Should have known Rifleman comes first.
In the 70's when I was stationed in Pensacola, I would cast my own bullets and reload for my 38 Chief's Special. Cost was cheaper than 22 shells. Even at 70's prices. I shot well over 5,000 rounds thru that little gun.
I used to load my 45LC Ruger Blackhawk so hot that the case head writing was being obliterated.
I've backed way back, but I still have some of those loads.
I was given a 95 Mauser which I rebarreled with a 7mm Madsen machine gun barrel. I chambered it to 7Mauser. I was able eventually, with reloads, to shoot one hole groups with it @ 100 yds. I'm reloading for a Rem 700 that I rebarreled to 6x47Lapua now. My groups aren't that tight. Yet(I hope).
I only buy ammunition for the rifles as a last resort. I still buy handgun ammo. In the ammo scare, I went crazy buying reloading supplies. Cases, primers, Powder, and lead.
Welcome to the club - Dad got me involve 59 years ago and the memories are good - even as I shoot some of the weapons he left me when he passed......one is a 1911 made in 1914 and still shoots straight - turns heads when others notice it at the range.
