It’s a gorilla, get over it
National Post ^ | May 31, 2016 | Christie Blatchford

It’s getting so there’s nothing to parody anymore.

Is it not galling enough that the death of any human being with any sort of profile is marked by a ghastly memorial of flowers and stuffed animals (that these maudlin displays have been around so long now they’re the furthest thing from “makeshift” doesn’t preclude that still being the favoured descriptor), a demand for a change in some law or another and a vigil or two?

Now, as an American blogger named Matt Walsh tweeted Monday, “A vigil for a freaking gorilla. God help this country.”

(I felt Walsh’s pain. In fact, for a minute I thought of proposing Matt’s Law, which would prohibit such mawkish public behaviour, and lock up offenders in tight quarters with one another, where they could fight for the rapidly depleting oxygen and put flowers meant for memorials in each other’s hair.)

Then, of course, Walsh proceeded to lose his mind and was soon tweeting, “While You Were Crying Over a Dead Ape, 125,000 Babies Were Just Murdered,” that a reference, if not exactly a segue, to abortion, there being no bad time to talk about “the mountain of dead human bodies piled in medical waste dumpsters outside abortion clinics …”

The poor gorilla, of course, is Harambe, a just-turned-17 western lowland gorilla who was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday after a little boy went under a rail, through some wiring and over a moat wall, and found himself the focus of Harambe’s attention.

But what if it were the gorilla your dreams, or a chimp off the old block...

Maybe if people would quit giving stupid zoo creatures names, they wouldn’t get so emotionally attached and ascribe human characteristics to dumb animals.

Of course you shoot the gorilla. End of story.

Don’t worry...before they sent him to the big crematory in the sky, they extracted his sperm.

It may be worth debating whether it was good policy to shoot the gorilla, but the outpouring of sympathy and maudlin emotion on the gorilla’s death shows what a bubble we live in. If these people want to see a cruel death of a gorilla, watch a film of gorillas fighting in the wild. The winning gorilla brutally attacks and kills the weaker gorilla. A shooting is much more merciful.

Agreed, when will our dishonest media finally realize they have over reported this story 100 thousand times - enough already!

He might have continued to drag the kid all over the cage without hurting him, but he might not have. Anybody want to bet? I’d pull the trigger. And no, I wouldn’t like it, but it would be a no-brainer for me.

People need to realize there is a difference between people and animals. I would sacrifice my own dog (if I had one) to save another human’s life.

If they had not shot the gorilla, and watched in horror as the gorilla tore the baby limb from limb, they would be all up in arms that no one shot the gorilla.

They just want to make drama either way.

This forum goes equally nuts when cops shoot people's dogs. I am one of those people.

The gorilla did not check into the zoo like it was a luxury hotel. He was captured or bred to be there for a profit. A certain minimal set of standards is required for such exhibits to protect the public and the animals. The question is was this zoo in compliance? (I have seen my daughter get out a measuring tape at a zoo) Were their credentials and certifications up to date? Most the habitat improvements you see in a zoo are not because the management would like a nicer exhibit, but to remain in compliance with regulations. Accomplishing both is a win-win. That's the goal.

If the zoo was in compliance they have nothing to worry about. If not, they are in big trouble. Either way a review will be done in accredited zoos for resulting changes which may be needed to protect the people and animals.

Most of them do understand there is a difference, they just value animals more than people. The same people that go crazy over the gorilla being shot most likely support abortion to the max. Crazy liberals, no other explanation needed.

I have to wonder what these people would be saying if the gorilla had killed the child.

These same people would say “WHY DIDN”T THEY JUST SHOOT THE DAMN THING?”

I do agree the zoo needs to be up to standards and then some. Sounded like this child didn’t have a hard time getting in, the zoo was depending on the drop off to keep the gorillas in but what about keeping children out? Fail on that part of it.

I take several children of all ages to a zoo several times a year. It is my responsibility (along with other adults in our group) to keep track of the children but with that said I would hope it would be harder for a child to get in that situation.
