Woman mistaken for transgender harassed in Walmart bathroom

DANBURY - Aimee Toms was washing her hands in the women’s bathroom at Walmart in Danbury Friday when a stranger approached her and said, “You’re disgusting!” and “You don’t belong here!”

After momentary confusion, she realized that the woman next to her thought - because of her pixie-style haircut and baseball cap - that she was transgender.

Besides being a pretty normal choice of style for women, Toms’ has a short haircut because she recently donated hair - for the third time - to a program that makes wigs for child cancer patients.

“I’ve had people call me all sorts of names for having short hair. I’ve had people call me a boy, I’ve had people call me a dyke, I’ve had people call me gay.” Toms said. “I’m grateful that that woman only called me disgusting and didn’t physically attack me … I was a victim of transphobia today as a cisgender female because my hair is short.”

Toms said she was supportive of transgender rights before Friday’s Walmart experience. She is close friends with several transgender people, including someone she went to high school with who went from prom queen to identifying as a male.

She thought her video would be seen only by friends and family, and was surprised to soon be getting messages of support from people “all across the country.”

What no video? I bet in a couple of days she’ll have a lucrative gofundme attached to that lie.

It means you identify with the gender you were born with. In other words a normal man or a normal woman. It's the opposite of transgendered.

According to wikia...."Cisgender is a term for someone who has a gender identity that aligns with what they were assigned at birth. The term was created for referring to "non-transgender" people without alienating transgender people."

....oh brother.

Really? I've had very short hair most of my life, and the only thing people ever call me is, "Ma'am." Nobody's given me any flack over it since elementary school.

I think this lady is telling us a fictional story.

This doesn’t pass the smell test.

She goes out of her way to have a mannish appearance, but she’s identifying as female, and is a biological female.

yet she has several trans-whatever friends. Who the heck has several trans friends, unless you are part of the LGBT community. or are trans yourself???

This whole thing sounds like an intentionally created incident, to draw attention to this whole trans-bathroom business which is in the news so much nowadays.

No kidding - the only thing missing from this story is actual proof.

True enough.

But this is what was going to happen. So now SHE (an actual she) DOES have a case, and the store will now be paying through the toilet if she chooses to go to court, or if they pay up to make it go away.

We cant push for these efforts to stop this, and then when someone that is innocent is embarrassed in public, we just say “well you were asking for it because you look weird”.

Like it or not, she did go to the proper toilet.

Sooooooo why does she not just say “I’m a girl”? Why this whole cisgender nonsense?

Wait a minute here. So a woman has to have long flowing locks or she isn’t a woman. Many women have short hair for ease of care. We also wear ball caps. I’m in the horse world. We all wear ball caps a lot and many have short hair because it’s easier to stuff it under your hunt cap or slick back under a cowboy hat. I think people are getting a wee bit nutty about this whole deal.
