'Sleeping giant' glacier may lift seas two metres: study

Paris (AFP) - A rapidly melting glacier atop East Antarctica is on track to lift oceans at least two metres, and could soon pass a "tipping point" of no return, researchers said Wednesday.

To date, scientists have mostly worried about the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets as dangerous drivers of sea level rise.

But the new study, following up on earlier work by the same team, has identified a third major threat to hundreds of millions of people living in coastal areas around the world.

"I predict that before the end of the century the great global cities of our planet near the sea will have two- or three-metre (6.5 - 10 feet) high sea defences all around them," said Martin Siegert, co-director of the Grantham Institute and Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the study's senior author.

From the air, the contours of Totten Glacier -- roughly the size of France -- are invisible because the entire Antarctic continent is covered by a seamless, kilometres-thick blanket of snow and ice.

They claim a 2m ocean rise from a glacier with a surface area roughly the size of France. If you look up the ocean area, get the volume of water needed, divide by the other area... You get just over 1 km average thickness required to store that much water.

Some poking around shows that the last 150 km of the glacier are already floating. The thickness of that floating ice starts at about 2.5 km at it's thickest, out to just 200 m at the calving edge. So a fair amount of that ice is already floating, already displacing water. Without some serious digging there's no way for us here to figure the actual volume of water/ice over land that could actually contribute to sea level rise. That is, if the entire thing melts.

The last time I checked, when the ice cubes melted in my rocks glass of Bourbon, the glass didn’t over-flow.

I predict that Martin Siegert, who has his girly-panties in a bunch, and says the sea-levels are going to rise by the end of the Century, won’t be alive to see it happen.

Can’t more and more boats built and launched..raise the sea level?

There are approximately 360,000,000 square kilometers of ocean. Glaciers and ice cover are about 15,000,000 square kilometers, or 1/24 the ocean area. It's projected all ice cover melting would raise sea levels 230 feet. This would mean the average ice cover would be 5,520 feet (230 x 24). I suppose this is reasonable, since Antarctica and Greenland have thick ice packs.

"The largest glacier in the world is the Lambert-Fisher Glacier in Antarctica. At 400 kilometers (250 miles) long, and up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) wide, this ice stream alone drains about 8 percent of the Antarctic Ice Sheet." This glacier is 1/375 of the earth's total ice cover. If it were the average thickness of the earth's ice cover, then sea levels would rise 230/375, or 0.61 feet, or 7.36 inches. Since thicker ice depths would be thicker in the interior, and coastal ice depths would be less, 4 or 5 inches would be an approximate increase from this one glacier alone.

I suspect that the alarmist author divided the average glacier depth of 5,520 by 375, which gives 14.72 feet. Adjusting this down some for thinner coastal ice depth would give about 10 feet.

It's worth noting that if the 230 feet figure is correct, raising oceans 10 feet would require that about 4.5% of the ice pack melts. However, I personally believe Proverbs 8:29 "...He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters would not transgress His command." Thus, we find like all things liberal, the root is despising God and His word.

Stop erosion, drainage and all rivers and streams that feed into the ocean and you stop sea level rise. The Mississippi river alone dumps 500 million metric tons of sediment a year into the Gulf of Mexico.

Another good idea, grow crops instead, pump all that water to the deserts in the west.

I was curious about that statement and had some meager time to look it up last night. Apparently the glacier fills a large draw that extends well below sea level. The scientific analysis of the effect upon SLR has already been done and it’s minimal (see my other post in this thread).

I truly despise the regression of the discipline of science, but this is what we get when there’s money funding stupidity: A preconceived conclusion to reinforce an agenda.

“Glaciers and ice cover are about 15,000,000 square kilometers”

Covering, what, exactly? Land or water?

Glaciers melting over water would NOT contribute to rising seas but actually to the lowering of the seas by 10% of the glacier size.

Let’s see...
Surface area of earth ~ 200,000,000 sq. miles
Oceanic coverage ~ 140,000,000 sq. miles

If we go with the low end estimate, say six feet, that would be

3902976000000000 * 6 = 23417856000000000.00 cubic feet

=159090 cubic miles

=cubed root of 159090 = 55 miles in each direction not allowing for the 10% that would remain above water, so over 60 MILES in EACH direction, with NO other changes.

Eggzackly! The beautiful property of H2O. Ice is less dense than water, that’s why it floats. And when floating ice melts, creates much less volume than if it were liquid.

so the sea levels will go DOWN!!
