HIRCINE [HUR sine, -sin]

Hircine is Latin for "billy goat;" the adjective hircinus means "goatlike," and more specifically "smelling like a goat," an odor reputed to emanate from old men. From hircinis we get hircine with both those meanings, as well as a meaning of its own: "lustful" in view of that legendary aspect of the goat's character. Cf. "old goat," a slang pejorative for an old lecher.
