Chicago Airports Recommend 3-Hour Cushion For Security Lines Tuesday
CBS Chicago ^ | May 17, 2016 | Staff

While the Transportation Security Administrationhas announced plans to hire 800 new officers, the wait for security at Chicago’s airports could be getting worse.

Tuesday morning, the city’s Aviation Department advised anyone flying out of O’Hare or Midway airports to show up three hours before their flight’s scheduled departure time. That’s even longer than the two-hour cushion the TSA has suggested for domestic flights.

No point in flying if your destination is less than 8 hours by driving.

So, what does the DHS know that they are not telling us peasants?

Indeed; cars, buses, trains; with these types of airport delays, all the alternatives need to be considered.

Even Midway?

Last I knew Midway was an oasis for the O’Hare weary traveler. Guess I’m behind the times.

I think the DHS is trying to force people into the biometric program. Enroll in that program has been very weak, and I think they are using these lines to force people to pay to join the pre-check program. That way, the government is paid to investigate you, and, I believe, they get certain biometric data on you in a file for all the government to use.

They know that they are pi-—— that the TSA budget was cut, so they appear to be doing a slow down to pi— o— the customers/clients/airlines, to get us to tell our congresscritters to restore / increase the budget.

Completely concur.
It is also why I think they divert attention with "sideshow acts" like the recent bathroom issue.
Like you, I watch for the sneaky sleight of hand, too.

I have to go up there in the next few weeks. This is not good news.

Yes even Midway. There are photos on the web showing the delays there.

Coincidentally, I had occasion to go though Midway twice in the last month, and it is an absolute hoot as the Southwest jets land on those short runways with a hard hit, as near the fence line as they can, and hit full reverse thrusters.

I have two thoughts -

1. TSA wants more money and more bodies to justify their existence.

2. The government is aware of a potential attack and is deliberately jamming up the system to give the allusion that they are stepping up security

They are doing this slowdown on purpose, for some reason. Memorial Day is a few weeks away.

I am a FREQUENT flyer and enrolled in both pre-check and the Global Entry program.

Only the Global Entry captured biometrics - retina and fingerprints. All the other information they requested was akin to what you supply when applying for a mortgage.

In return for the retina and fingerprint scans, I breeze through customs, particularly upon re-entry into the US. I haven’t had any overseas travel yet in 2016 (it’s upcoming) but last year Global Entry made my life EASY for air travel thru customs.

My PRe-check credentials likely utilize my Global Entry data, as I supplied my Global Entry “trusted traveler ID” during the pre-check application process.

I get TSA pre-check over 90% of the time domestically, and even the TSA is surprised when I go thru the regular line with my Global Entry ID - “why aren’t you pre-check?” they ask ME.

The data they aggregate really isn’t much and it makes my life easy.

My daughter is flying to see her boyfriend in a couple of weeks. I don’t understand why this is all of a sudden a problem.

Lets throw up the scenario that in 2016, you do four flights, and at least two of them are “missed” flights because of TSA. What are the odds that you start to downsize your travel deal...refusing to travel via airlines unless it’s totally necessary? If you just convinced 100,000 people to travel half as much....you’d start to screw with profit numbers. What if I could convince 500,000 people to travel half as much?

I traveled recently to Singapore and Hong Kong. Went through security at both locations. In the case of Hong Kong, it took 12 minutes to make my way through their system at 2PM in the afternoon. In Singapore, at 4PM, I made the transit via security in less than eight minutes. In both cases, they did the full amount of security that you’d typically expect in Atlanta or Philly (which typically takes me 45 minutes of waiting from the start of the line to the point I finish the process).

I think all of this relates to some effort to get TSA to hire more people, and thus increase the size of their operation. This will relate back to you eventually....in increased cost for airport taxes, etc.

I have been to Midway at least 10 times this year. My average time through security is 5 minutes (tsa pre).
