Right-Hearted Patient Confuses Doctors, Medical Devices

Yadav has his heart on the right side of his chest

A blue-collar worker was rushed to a hospital in Mussafaa industrial area of Abu Dhabi following a chest pain. The patient complained of persistent chest pain on the right side, radiating to right shoulder.

However, the doctor attending him at the Lifecare Hospital was confused as he could not hear his heartbeat.

The reason: the patient has his heart on the right side.

The Egyptian doctor with more than 25 years of experience says he has not seen such a case in his life.

Dr. Khaled Galal (Consultant Interventional Cardiologist), Lifecare Hospital, Mussafa, Abu Dhabi was trying to locate his heartbeats and do necessary tests with machines that normally fit well with any ordinary patient who have their vital internal organs like heart located on the left side of the body.

“In my 25-year career, I have never came across such a case,” said Dr Khaled, who successfully treated and solved the workers’ chest problems.

The abnormal positioning of heart is known as situs inversus, referring to the mirror-image reversal of the organs in the chest and abdominal cavity.

Yadav, who was a leading a normal life earlier, felt chest pain and on his admission in the hospital, doctors realised that he has a rare case of Dextrocardia Situs Inversus, a medical condition that occurs in one in 10,000 births.

The patient underwent an ultrasound examination of the abdomen that showed his liver on the left side and spleen on the right side confirming what is called situs inversus.

“When you examine a patient, you place the stethoscope on the left side to know the pulse rate or heartbeat. In the case of Yadav, I could not get any heartbeat. Then we took an X-Ray,” he said.

“It is a rare case and the normal medical devices could not fit his body. The medical devices are designed to handle a normal person who have their heart, lever, etc. on the left side of the body. Only in very rare cases is a person’s heart found on the right side of the body,” said an official from the hospital.

“Before the revelation of his condition by the doctors, Mr. Yadav was not aware of his condition. He has gone back to India and is taking rest now. He was discharged last Thursday and is recovering,” the hospital officials said.

1 in 10,000 births seems fairly common medically. Maybe it’s usually acccompanied by other birth defects leading to an otherwise high mortality rate.

Hey, I remembered what this is called! Among other reasons, it can be found in mirror image twins.

“Among other reasons, it can be found in mirror image twins.”

THAT was going to be my question. Even as a layman without an advanced degree or even an un-advanced degree, that was the firstest thing that came to mind.

My husband is a radiologist. I think he has run across a case or two during his career. I'll have to ask him.

I know a set of twins, and one of them has this condition.

These doctors didn’t take any half hearted measures in finding out what was wrong. They are all heart.

A street pastor acquaintance of mine, had a son who had certain internal organs that were reversed. The doctors told him the baby would not survive past 2 years of age, I believe. The man was a very successful building contractor in Calgary, raised Roman Catholic in Poland, but was upset with the hypocrisy he saw in his church, both among the congregants and the priests. (Of course, not having attended an Protestant church, he was unaware of the hypocrisy within most churches of any denomination.)

He promised God that if He would cure his son, he would preach the gospel on the streets of Calgary. A short while later, doctors found that all the baby’s organs had moved to their proper place and the boy was healthy. The man joined a Messianic Jewish congregation and preaches on the streets of Calgary to this day.

While I appreciate his fervour and the successes StreetChurch has had on the streets, I believe his style with those in authority is overly confrontational. ‘Street Church’ is excellent with the ‘street people’ of Calgary, but it is almost as though he purposely picks fights with secular leaders in the community rather than trying to show them Christian love. I believe he would have more success in being a little less confrontational with the ‘movers and shakers’ in the city.

Technically, isn’t the heart located in he center of the chest...with a part of it slightly offset to the left?

I had no idea my lever was on my left side.
