Interesting enough, the song’s title was also a line in an old Three Stooges routine. I don’t know what came first, the song or the line.
Moe: “What’s the big idea?”
Curly: “I just dropped in!”
Moe: “Well. If we knew you was coming, we’d have baked a cake.”
Sometimes nostalgia just sneaks up and bites you.
The only version of this I ever heard was in a 3 Stooges short.
I remember in the mid fifties my mother yelling out to my brother not to forget to bring home cake mix from the store. Unfortunately a bunch of the boys on the block heard her and on his way beck from the store they started singing If I knew you were coming I would have baked a cake impugning his pack status. He dropped the bag and started throwing fists at his wolf pack. The box of cake mix broke open and contents spread all over the ground. When he returned home without the mix, my mother asked him where was the cake mix. He said “I forgot”.
