Don’t know what to get Mom? Take care of your warrants before Mother’s Day
The State ^ | 5.5.2016 | Glen Luke Flanigan

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC Getting charged with a crime is never fun, but with Mother’s Day approaching, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department is aiming to make the process as painless as possible.

On Saturday, the day before the holiday, anyone with an outstanding warrant can get it taken care of between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Greater St. Luke’s Baptist Church, at 5213 Farrow Road.

For past Mother’s Days, the sheriff’s department has concentrated on rounding up folks with unpaid child support. This year will have more of a focus on helping people move forward with their lives, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said. People with outstanding arrest warrants can have them served, get a court date and post bond, all without going to jail.

“Instead of going and locking people up, we want to help them out by giving them a chance to come in and get these warrants they’ve got hanging over their heads cleared up so they can go spend time with their mothers on Mother’s Day,” Lott said.

Lott is billing the day as a way to “Make Momma Proud.”

Anyone who shows up can bring an attorney or even their mother, Lott said. For those who don’t have an attorney, someone from the public defender’s office will be on hand to help.

In addition to getting folks cleared to spend the holiday with family, there’s a longer-term focus – helping them be ready for employment opportunities. Representatives from various organizations will be present to work with people on that.

“They can’t move forward on jobs, get jobs, because they’re constantly on the run,” Lott said. “This gives them an opportunity for a new start.”

Officials are expecting between 100 to 200 people Saturday. Many suspects who turn themselves in will be granted a personal recognizance bond, meaning they will be released on their promise to appear in court later.

“A lot of people might have a bad check warrant or a failure to go in and pay a traffic ticket,” Lott said. “These are things that shouldn’t be penalizing them their whole life.”

People with warrants for more serious charges might not get a personal recognizance bond, Lott said – but when setting bond, the court will take into consideration that suspects turned themselves in.

The sheriff urged folks with outstanding warrants to get them taken care of for their mothers’ sake.

“We’ve all been blessed with a mom who loves us in good times and bad times,” Lott said. “This is your opportunity to make her proud, and she’ll see you’re doing something positive.”

The child support enforcement thing is out of hand.

A few months ago the county cops laid siege to a neighbor’s house. There were six police vehicles on their lawn, a chopper overhead, and reportedly another six vehicles around the block. They used a loudspeaker to call out the resident. I thought it was an arrest for murder or something, the way it went down.

Later on I find out it was enforcement of a late $750 child support payment. They must have spent $10,000 enforcing it, if not more.

Arrested? Sure! Convicted? Never.

Laz says I’m not guilty...not necessarily INNOCENT, but definitely not guilty. ;)

“A lot of people might have a bad check warrant”

A warrant for a bounced check?

I thought they just put your check on the wall of the bodega.

A shame that failure to pay a traffic fine can have such dire consequences for the commoners while criminals, such as Hillary, can amass millions of dollars by illegally selling influence and be running for president. That is just wrong.

I had to fire an employee when the law changed in his state. Unpaid traffic tickets became a felony after 6 months. He blew out of Idaho at 90 mph, got a ticket, never went back and figured it was all done. Nope.

Cost him a few thousand dollars to get it cleaned up.

A felony for a revenue violation. Sheesh.

They are doing this in NYC today. Anyone with open warrants are supposedly allowed to go in and get them cleared up. One of my nieces posted this to another about her b/f that might have had open warrants. When I reposted this on FB I was told by someone who knows the ins and outs of jail, said it was probably a scam, as they had run one of them same a few years earlier. Rounded up a bunch of felons to jail.
Don’t know if it is or not. I do know a lot of peeps up here in NY don’t trust em.

Yes, it is. But the elites, who want the same protections later on when their crimes make the light of day, will never change a thing.

Several years ago the Tallahassee Police Department set up a flashing sign in a mostly black neighborhood reading, “If you have outstanding warrants, for the next three days only you can turn yourself in for free at xxxxxx. You will not be charged a fee.” A cop told me it was amazingly successful. And, yes, for the most part, they put them in jail.

I guess I’ve lived a somewhat sheltered life. Up until 2008, I had no idea that people avoided being photographed due to outstanding warrants. I took a job with a former customer after closing down my business due to the economy, and was updating the company’s website and FaceBook page with photos from company events. A few of the people out in the plant were outraged that they had been photographed and absolutely refused to allow photos of them to be used. I didn’t understand it then. Now I do.

But some people refuse to be photographed and have it out of their control and placed on the internet because they do not want it in government databases.

So have you ever seen photos of Bill Gates kids? Bezos kids.....?

I’m pretty certain that wasn’t the case in this instance.

Back when I was in college they used to be kinda like "IOUs" that you could write to a grocery store 3 days before payday when you needed more beer.
