Owner claims pet baked at doggy daycare

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

A Live 5 News investigation has revealed there are no laws in South Carolina regulating doggy daycare businesses, a finding that comes after a Mount Pleasant woman's pet dog died at a Mount Pleasant doggy daycare.

Judith Von says she regularly boarded her two year old dog Zane at Paws in Paradise on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard.

She says there were no problems until August 5, 2015.

She says she dropped off Zane at 9 a.m. Von says she returned at 5 p.m. to pick him up and says she was met by the owner.

"She started this thing about, 'Well, this has never happened before' and I said, 'Where is Zane?' And she was kind of going on and I kept saying, 'Where's Zane?' and I was losing it at this point. I was starting to yell and scream, 'Where's my dog?'" Von says.

What happened to Zane was captured on the daycare's web camera video, a copy of which was supplied by Mount Pleasant Police.

At a time stamp of 1 p.m., the video shows Zane and some other dogs were let out to play in a yard. The footage shows Zane checking out an empty metal dog pool propped up against a fence. While an employee cleans up, Zane finds an opening and goes inside the pool. Suddenly, the video shows the pool falling on Zane, covering him up entirely.

It appears from the video no one saw it happen.

Five hours later, the video shows an employee pulling up the pool and finding Zane. The video then shows another employee run out, see what happened, then walk away with her hands in the air. Another employee in the footage puts his hands behind his head.

They should have known the dog was missing within an hour, max, although that might still have been too late.

Horrible accident. Businesses have insurance for this reason. Pay the dog owner generously.

Reminds me of two businesses that shared an address, a veterinarian and a taxidermist. Either way, you get your dog back.

Sad, but additional government intervention seems unnecessary.

I hate the thought of any being dying in that fashion, but those were my first thoughts, too.

Well, the pet is in Paradise. Trees, fire hydrants, cats and squirrels to chase ... Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yes, it is horrible but it was an accident. Recompense the owner, sure; criminal charges, just no. Prayers for the family and the dear departed. Prayers for the kennel workers, too, who must feel very bad.

Yep, but sometimes, the accident is so bad there is liability involved. The woman took her dog there on the assumption it would be taken care of. At the very least, the "metal dog pool leaning against a fence" sounds like some fairly slovenly doggie care. If they want anyone to ever trust them with their pets again after this hits the news, they better pay generously or kiss their business goodbye. I know I would never trust them.

Looking at the title of the thread, I was thinking that it somehow involved a bakery and homosexuals....

Seriously, I feel very badly for the owner, and for the suffering that the dog went through. That’s why we boarded our dog once, and never again. She was well treated (that we know of), but very depressed for a couple of weeks after we got her back. We now leave her with friends or cousins

Government gets involved, pet boarding fees go up, more dogs spend their days in the garage or chained in the yard.

I have a doggie door, they free-feed and have several sources of water, they stay home alone with someone checking on them every few days.

I read that Obama’s daughter tried to open a doggy day care at the White House but some of the plumper dogs turned up missing because daddy was cooking them on a spit on the south lawn.

Just a rumor though...

Thanks for the heads-up. I better not ever board our dog, she gets depressed seeing us get ready for work/school/church, i.e. whenever she knows she'll be left alone. lol

And she's got the sad look down pat.

If I had a doggie door I’d probably come home to a black bear trashing my house.

Yes, it was an accident, not negligence. I cannot stand this society which wants to sue for every single unavoidable mishap. Stuff happens.
