World’s largest grown-up dorm is ready for millennial move-ins

It’s easy to work in a shared office, but what about moving into a “co-living” space?

A building in pricey West London will soon take this new trend in dormlike dwellings to a new level. Co-living spaces are typified by individual bedrooms, sometimes tiny ones, mixed with an abundant package of shared amenities. The 550-unit Old Oak, whose size makes it the world’s biggest co-living property, debuts next week to its first residents, according to the Spaces.

Of course, the 11-story building gives a special nod to the city’s millennial population, which Curbed says values turnkey convenience. There are small-but-furnished bedrooms and shared kitchens, but it’s the rents that speak more highly to young folks not earning much: Rents range from the equivalent of $327 to $582 per week. Citywide, average rents are reported to be over $2,100 per month.

I like this concept. I work in real estate and really dislike zoning regulations. They make you pay for a complete home or apartment. And sometimes it is so restrictive you can't build small (at least for a profit). Example of this if if the lot size is required to be large.

I think it would benefit our own country to offer more choices. Give ppl only what they need/want. Why should people be forced to pay for what they don't value if there were alternatives available at a lower price?

$582 a week? I pay less a month for a 900 sq. ft. cottage on 1/4 acre with beach access to one of the great lakes. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again- This is why I can’t stand cities.

Sound much like the typical boarding house in America in the 50’s.

Yep it sounds like a boarding house. A slightly different form of the concept of renting a room, rather than having a whole apartment or whole house.

They seem to be secretive about the bathroom facilities. No pictures. No mention of where they are located.

Is it that they are shared or so small they border on claustrophobic?

Nope. In the “thumb”. East coast, lake Huron. Great in the summer, “interesting” in the winter when storms come off the water.

What happened to young people just finding their own room mates to share a living space? Do not fall for the dorm scam, millennials! You are being treated like rats.
