New Adblock Plus service lets you pay websites after removing ads
mashable ^ | Kellen Beck

With Flattr Plus, annoying and obtrusive ads will be removed from webpages just like with Adblock Plus. Users will also get to choose a monthly payment amount they want to spread across the websites they visit

The payment system is similar to how Flattr works, except instead of a digital tip jar appearing on websites, Flattr Plus doesn't let you choose which websites get your money. Flattr Plus keeps track of the websites you visit and engage with, allocating your monthly payment across those websites proportionally.

For websites to get that money, Adblock Plus' Ben Williams wrote in an announcement that it just takes them five minutes to sign up.

"There are no tags or logos placed on your website — you just start getting free money," Williams wrote in the announcement.

I tried AdblockPlus - waaay too heavy on memory use and slows the system.

Then I tried “uBlock Origin” - light, fast and VERY effective.

“uBlock Origin” is HIGHLY recommended!!!

Here’s an interesting solution to the problem.

Disclaimer - I don’t have this set up. I learned of it last night from a friend who does. I have an unused Pi+ laying around, that I tried to use as a TV box. It was too slow for that, replace it with a Roku.

Block Millions Of Ads Network-wide With A Raspberry Pi-hole 2.0
http://jacobsalmela.com/block-millions-ads-network-wide-with-a-raspberry-pi-hole-2-0/

The Pi-hole can block ads for all devices on your network. All you need is a Raspberry Pi connected to your router. It was inspired as a low-cost, open source alternative to the AdTrap. The Pi-hole works on the the B, B+ and Pi 2 (it can also run on the Zero, but you need a micro-USB-to-Ethernet adapter)

Block Over 1.6 Million Ad-serving Domains (And More)

Currently, over 1.6 million (if you decide to use the mahakala source list) domains known to serve advertisements can be blocked before they even reach your computer. The list of these domains are maintained by different sites across the Internet. The Pi-hole queries these sites and compiles them into an aggregated list, which is then stored on the Raspberry Pi to block advertisements.

Anytime a Website wants to load something from a domain on the list, it is redirected back to the Pi, so the real server is never contacted. This can not only speed up your Web browsing, but it will also reduce your bandwidth usage because your browser is not downloading the ad from the server.

I tried “Don’t go to sites where you need ad blockers.”

So far, so good.

I just disable the ad blocker on the sites I want to support. They are usually great about not having malware type ads so I don’t worry too much.

Agreed I changed over a few days ago to Ublock Origin, way better, less memory, faster and better. A plus is a lot of the nag sites that nag you about having an adblocker on do not recognize ublock yet :)

Ads on websites are responsible for most malware and virus attacks.
They should pay me!

I just installed this on my FF browser and removed ad block plus program.

U Block-—automatic updates is set to default. Is this what it should be? Thanks!

That sounds logical - i.e. to get auto updates to keep the app working optimally.

As I posted above, “uBlock Origin” is far superior to AdBlockPlus.

If you use Adblock Plus (I do) I wouldn’t rush to drop it. They aren’t charging for use of Adblock Plus as of now and their association with this new company is just getting started.
