"...We're not Spartans, we're Americans! With a capital 'A' huh! You know what that means? Do you? That means that our Forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the retched refuse. The underdog. We're mutts!"

False.

And not just false, but perniciously false.

The graduation scene was filmed at a drill pad on Fort Knox. Two years later I learned D&C on that same pad.

I can’t stand Bill Murray. I also hated Robin Williams and Johnathan Winters shtick. They just had to work too hard for cheap laughs.

Patton’s speech as done by George C. Scott. A classic.

( I do like Bill Murray)

CIF and the barber shop shown in the movie were still being used in 97 when I went through Knox.

“There’s something WRONG with us...something very, very WROOOONG with us! We’re SOLDIERS!”

You know, a couple of years after seeing this movie, I joined the Army anyway.

My Father related the story of Snuffy Smith...

Not a very good soldier...just a Medal of Honor earner !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maynard_Harrison_Smith

Smith was assigned to KP duty the week that he was awarded the Medal of Honor as punishment for arriving late to a briefing. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson placed the medal around Smith’s neck during a formation.[7]

From my mother’s sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

Andy Rooney once told a story about ball turret gunners...

I wonder if it remembers me.
Many of Bill Murray's movies have portrayed men in crisis as they pass their prime. Sad to say I can identify with that and am therefore a hugh fan.

Taking a break...

And just last week I found out Bill Murray is moving here to Marietta, GA, the emerald jewel on Atlanta's perimeter.

Bill Murray Explains Why He’s Moving to Marietta, Georgia

I soon could be walking down the isle in Home Depot and find myself face-to-face with the legend himself, so, I got that going for me, which is nice.

So I got that going for me - which is nice.

I was to intimidated to talk to John Glenn years ago when he was in the BX with some colonel.

I also comment (only half-jokingly) that I joined the Army after seeing Stripes, and I did over 28 years. I’ve probably used the “Have that removed” joke, and “that guy owes me money” more than most other humans. Oh, yeah, and “I swallowed a lot of aggression, along with a lot of pizzas.”

After all this reminiscing, I think I’ll go watch it again. Hard to fathom how much better movies like this and Caddyshack were than the total crap being written and produced today.

“Nothing more lovable than a mutt”.

So very true. I am part Cherokee (from Mom) but resemble my more Swedish, German side (Thanks to Dad).

That at least makes me a designer mutt, doesn’t it?
