Ronald Reagan unsuccessfully challenged Gerald Ford, for the presidential nomination that year but came back in 1980 to claim the presidency itself. Ray Barnhart, a Reagan co-manager from Texas, criticized Mrs. Ford for having "danced a jig" with Orlando. Barbara Staff, another Texas co-chairman, called Betty Ford's behavior "a low, cheap shot".[9] It was later confirmed that the Ford campaign slipped the song to the band when Nancy Reagan entered the hall.

Sounds typical of the Fords. I was at the Republican National Conention in Kansas City in 1976 as part of a Youth for Reagan contingent. I don't recall that incident--it may have occurred at one of the sessions I was unable to attend--but I do recall when Jack Ford, Gerald's son stood at the edge of the balcony and poured a bag of confetti onto the Texas delegation seated below, right after Ford won the nomination.
The Texas and California delegations were both for Reagan. Occasionally, one of the delegations would shout, "Viva!" and the other would answer, "Olé!" I will long remember the shouts of "Viva! Olé!" between the two delegations.
Don't forget "The Night Chicago Died."
