Soaring Suicides Emerge As a National Crisis Laid to Economic Stall

Middle aged people laid off and unable to find work are taking another way out. They’re killing themselves. Suicide rates are soaring, according to federal data released last week. ... People in need of work are twice as likely to take their own lives as employed people, and people fired in their forties and fifties find it hardest to get hired again.

That makes boosting economic growth a life- and- death issue.

Just wait until more work has been given to the robots. Then you will see the true level of suffering and despair from the human workers now left behind.

I think eventually, the government will have to mandate that a certain quota of jobs will be filled only by human workers. As much as I don’t like gov. intervention in the private sector, I think this idea will be seriously considered and debated within the next 15 years. Watch and you will see it too. A cultural upheaval is approaching in the way we approach work.

I too draw the line at automation being implemented so quickly that there are massive disruptions and nobody would be able to earn a living. However that would only need to be a temporary measure as new science discoveries, products, and services fill the gap. There is nothing like human nature for creating work that needs to be done. In the future robots will do the repetitive work and men and women can focus on more creative careers.

There needs to be a college-level course in becoming an accomplished “Handiman”.

Like what? Growing pot? Manufacturing's NOT coming back. Anyone who thinks it can and will is delusional.

Yep, I saw it earlier. No surprise.

Tens of millions in Middle America became the results of their reckless mismanaged, destructive policies by those in D.C.

Thanks for the heads up.

You sound like Obama bitching about ATMs. The modern American home is filled with things that eliminated jobs in the past yet there are still jobs. We no longer have to pay people to take out chamberpots or haul water to our house. The iceman no longer brings ice because, by God, my fridge makes it for me!

I’m not saying there won’t be pain or job losses. There will be big disruptions but there will eventually be plenty of work for everybody, they will just doing different things.

I know a lot of people that are making a lot of money growing pot. They been saying that the computer will be putting people out of work since the day they came out but there’s a lot of people making a good living and working on computers. In fact IT professionals were making such a good living that our treacherous government decided to bring in foreigners to knock them down a peg. They must have been getting too lippy. Time for payback now.

When robots can fix other robots then what will we do?

Meanwhile, obama tells us the economy’s fine and he’s personally the greatest thing since sliced bread.

You are right and you do use the key word of “eventually”. One of our current major problems as I see it is that we have a gazillion people, probably mostly somewhat older white males, that have never done anything other than robotish tasks, generally for years, and those are primarily the ones associated with the jobs that are gone. They are ill equipped to learn to do something else, even if there were something else to do.

It just may be a bridge to huge for most to cross.

Make money by destroying robots and selling the parts?

It’s easy to understand how this could be happening if you’ve been Michigan-based since 2000. Between the economy, job market, political correctness and the rise of HR in corporate hierarchies, the excuses for not hiring ready, willing and able people with as much experience as their periods of unemployment since 2000 have afforded them are plentiful.

Another observation has been that even when work comes along, recruiters are still hunting the employed non-job-seekers in order to to draw them way from having periods of legitimate long term employment. Most of them wouldn’t have a job if they weren’t busy trying to get people to send them a resume. There is NO “war on women” in Human Resources. In fact, because there is no WOW in HR, there is no WOW at all.

Duly noted your preference wide swaths for illegal aliens and unchecked immigration (which includes terrorists/foreign armies) over the impersonal robots and rising wages.

Nice master planned economy you want there.

For our white-lives-don’t-matter president Obama secretly wishes these suicides increase so he can take credit for the resulting lower unemployment rate.
