Switzerland has suspended the citizenship process for the family of two teenage Muslim brothers who refused to shake hands with female teachers.

The brothers aged 14 and 15 said physical contact with women who were not family members was against their faith.

Some Swiss Muslim groups said there was no religious justification for refusing to shake a female teacher's hand and urged the Swiss not to give in to extremist demands. But one Islamic organisation said a handshake between men and women was prohibited.

It must be some of that religious liberty I've been hearing about.

I heard a story about a Canadian couple that adopted a middleeastern boy when he was around 8. Even at that age it was so obvious he disrespected and hated women so much that they had to return him (sic).

Orthodox Jewish men can’t shake women’s hands either. So I don’t have a problem with this as stands. However, why are these guys getting citizenship? I’m wondering if they found some lonely Swiss women who married them?

I had a Canadian employee who married a Paki woman. Then he found out that, since her family had servants in Pakistan to do things like clean the toilet, she refused to do it. So he got to clean the toilet himself. I doubt they remained married for long.

Instead of importing Mooselimb Savages, they should be importing Syrian Christians and other middle east Christians for a fresh infusion of Christianity to fix the damage secularism has done to europe...

I think anybody and everybody should have the liberty not to shake hands and, further than that, to avoid unwanted physical contact.

Good Lord, when there's a sexual molestation/rape crisis going on in most places where young Muslim men interface with Western women, the scruples of those few who simply don't want to touch would be the least of my concerns.

Orthodox Jewish men can’t shake women’s hands either.

Well, I'm a Christian male who taught math for a number of years at a Lubavitcher Yeshiva (it's a long story).

Anyway, there were many women teachers there, and many women held positions of authority. And when the Yeshiva's religious restrictions were pointed out outsiders like me, it was always done gently, and with respect.

I doubt if any of that would occur at, say, a mosque.

Aside to Yaelle: I know you're not equating Orthodox Jews at all with Islamists.

I have experienced this, where a Muslim woman has stated that it was against her religion to shake my hand

You know how hard it is for even Europeans themselves to obtain Switzerland citizenship? Unless of course you are uber uber rich, and it still cost a hefty price.

This family of the two moooooslem no-handshake teens must be extra special case........

Their German dialect in more inscrutable to me than that of the people of Tyrol. I think I would understand more of the conversation from an argument at the annual meeting of the South Tyrolean People’s Party than the average Swiss German conversation!

Then again, if it’s this guy, all bets are off... or moot. . . or gay or something: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubdk_yhGFjc

I get your point. But we’re talking about getting citizenship. What’s the likelihood this family would assimilate? My guess is zero.

If I were in charge they would never gain citizenship.

Perhaps. But I wouldn’t base denial of citizenship on an aversion to shaking hands. I would never grant citizenship (or even residency) to anyone who advocates Shari’a law.
