I believe Levin mentioned this a few days ago -- IIRC the books were handed out as a bonus for signing up / joining or something. A lot of Trump supporters screamed about payoffs -- personally I don't see the problem.
I recall many cases where an organization with common objectives with an author hands out his book as some kind of incentive for people to join the organization.
