He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor awarded to a civilian in the United States, by President Barack Obama in 2009.

Born Oct. 7, 1913, Medicine Crow was the official Crow Tribe historian. He was a Crow war chief, having completed the required four war deeds while serving in the Army during World War II.
Those deeds included leading a war party, touching the first fallen enemy and stealing his weapon, and entering an enemy camp and stealing horses.
“I never got a scratch,” he recalled about 60 years later.
102 years of age is a solid healthy run!
How did this hard ass pull that off?
It’s too bad that meeting Obama is one of his final memories. I just read about this guy a week or two ago.
My Great Grandfather had some interaction with the Crow in the 1870’s in the Dakotas. It was not peaceful.
RIP......I’ll bet Obama doesn’t go to a baseball game over giving this some attention.

The Germans relied heavily on horses. So I am sure Mr. Crow had opportunities.
When I saw what year he rec’d the Medal, I thought of Fort Hood- Obama gave a frivolous “shout out” to this man before commenting on Fort Hood.

Yes, they did. Especially toward the end of the war when fuel was in very short supply. Horse drawn wagons are about the only thing that kept the supply lines operating from January to April 1945. They were used extensively on the Italian and Eastern Front even before.

They mention he almost got fired from the movie “They Died with Their Boots On” because he talked about how Custer needlessly got his men killed. But they don’t mention that his grandfather, White Man Runs Him, was one of Custer’s Indian Scouts who tried to warn him about what he was about to get into.
When the scouts saw that Custer was going to attack the Indian camp anyway, the head of the scouts told him “You and I are going home today by a road we do not know.”
White Man Runs Him died when Medicine Crow was 11 and by that time he’d memorized all the old man’s stories.
I wondered that, too. However, there were cases where both sides used horses to transport equipment, ammo, and arms.
What bothers me is that it seems as though as soon as these old guys get a little recognition they die.
Wisdom is often ignored in this world. Sad but true.
