NYPD cop shoots, kills Bronx family’s beloved dog in incident captured on video

One minute Yvonne Rosado was dancing with her pet pit bull inside their Bronx apartment — and the next, her dog was dead in the hallway, a city cop’s bullet in its head.

A gruesome video captured the officer, responding to a domestic violence call at a neighboring apartment, pumping a fatal gunshot into beloved 4-year-old Spike.

The pet’s devastated owner says the cop needlessly lost his cool when the typically pleasant pooch, its tail wagging happily, wandered outside before the Feb. 13 tragedy.

“The officer just reacted badly,” a teary Rosado told the Daily News on Thursday. “I was screaming, ‘He’s friendly! He’s friendly!’ But he still did that to my dog.”

Many of you know that I work for the NYPD, and I'm a very pro-cop. But looking at this video makes me angry and sad. From the looks of it there was zero reason to pull that 12-pound trigger. That dog posed no threat whatsoever. We see dogs as "property" but they aren't property to their owners.

Cops killing dogs is no longer news.

That was my other issue. His partner is in his background. If I was the other cop, I’d never work with this guy again.

Usually there is a question as to if the cop was correct in shooting. Here I do not believe he was. The video is clear.

I gotta think he would not show any coolness under fire if he freaked over a tail-wagging dog.

The only way to fix these problems is to start holding Police Officers accountable under the law, exactly the same way an average citizen would be.

Destroying Private Property
Reckless Endangerment involving a firearm
Reckless discharge of a Firearm
Discharging a firearm within the city limits
reckless endangerment involving a firearm

ALL FELONIES

The Average Citizen would be CHARGED WITH ALL OF THESE!

not sure if I am missing something here.
Police knock on door\ring door bell.
Door opens and a dog comes out, a pit bull ?

at that point, what is proper police procedure ?

That’s for sure!
The first incident in my life-long diss of cops occurred when I was in 5th grade and a cop came wheeling into the school playground and shot a dog right outside the classroom windows!

It’s up to the cop. If you reasonably feel the dog is about to cause you or someone else physical injury then you can shoot. This dog did not charge, it wagged its tail, and it actually stopped and turned to look at the other officer. There was no imminent threat of physical injury to the officer who discharged.

Civil suit. Compensatory and punitive damages.

Exactly. Careless and reckless escalation of force with innocents all over the place.

Do they have dog killing class in the police academies now? (Its not a rhetorical question.)

You can offer him the back of your hand to smell but he is just going to know that you are already scared shitless just because you have to be there. Your pulse is over a hundred already and he can tell you are excited for no good reason that concerns his pack.

You can tase a dog. You can beat him with an asp. You can shove your gloved hand down it throat and yank on its tounge and it will run away yelping. I have been in more fights with dogs than with humans and have won every one and have never shot any of them.

There’s nothing wrong with disabling a ferocious dog. My point was only that THIS dog showed zero signs of outward aggression. Tragic.

Well at 2-3 feet the odds of success are in his favor.

Based of what I see, compensation for the woman and some type of disciplinary action for the officer are in order . In addition, a policy of using non-lethal means of incapacitating dogs needs to be in place. I knew a number of state and city police officers in the late 60’s, most of whom laughed off dog attacks. My how times have changed.

And the only reason we know that this dog wasnt showing signs of outward aggression is because it was caught on camera.

If it had not been caught on camera it would be the cops word against everyone elses in the incident except his partners and this would of been a very ferocious dog, and the officer would have been sorely afraid for his life or that of his partner and would have been fully justified in discharging his weapon and maintaining safety of the situation.

These kind of cops are nothing but pussies or bullies with badges and guns.

From the camera it doesn’t look like the dog posed a threat, but the cop had a different view. People’s dogs aren’t nearly as cute to others as their owner’s seem to think they are.

Happened to my niece and a cop shot the dog in the front leg crippling it. They left the dog and family in agony.
I sure as hell hope you aren’t one of these trigger happy LEOs but you are asking for permission to shoot...
