During the Feb. 6 Republican debate, Trump pledged that he would support waterboarding and would "bring back a hell of a lot worse." Last November, Trump told an audience in Columbus, Ohio, that waterboarding works. "Believe me, it works. And you know what? If it doesn't work, they deserve it anyway, for what they're doing. It works."
Hayden disputed that notion Monday, saying, "We never did anything to anyone because they deserved it."
"This was never looking backward. This was trying to keep Americans safe looking forward. People can argue about what we did, but it was never, never a form of punishment," he said.
Asked whether Cruz's frequent calls to "carpet-bomb ISIS into oblivion" would be feasible, Hayden was firm.
"No, and it would be immoral"

I was expecting a quote from H.W.
Ha. The CIA has taken to killing terrorists rather than capturing them because they don’t seem to be able to hold them for ever or interrogate them to get information. It easier to kill them and gather up the evidence left behind. Killing is more acceptable to them than waterboarding.
I thoroughly disagree. It would not be immoral to blow the hell out of ISIS, anymore than what we dropped on Hitler and Japan.
Further, Trump did not say it’s punishment he just said he wouldn’t hesitate with water boarding or worse.
I’ve seen this guy on tv going on about how we can’t act that way in the 21st century. TELL THAT TO ISIS. They will respond by cutting your head off while you scream.
I have met Hayden. He is an extremely intelligent man, who thinks out of the box...talents completely wasted by government after his distinguished military career. This article is blowing his comments out of proportion. General Hayden is giving his usual, analytical, emotionless responses. He did not judge either man, just stated the facts.
