1st Guards Tank Army has a distinguished history going back to post-Stalingrad WWII. It was commanded by the excellent Mikhail Katukov. It participated in the final drive to Berlin.

Isn’t the current thinking that armor is antiquated warfare?

Interesting Guards Tank Army to be equipped with T-72s and T-80s. Guess that is because all the T-90s in Syria? /

Same thinking that said mass tactical airdrops were obsolete up until days before Operation Just Cause.

Armor is not antiquated for rolling over the little sisters of the poor which seems to be what Russia specializes in these days.

The Western Europeans would surrender at the mere sight of any Russian tanks coming their way.

In a few years they will likely receive T-14s, as the upgraded 80 & 90s will be pushing obsolescence by then.

The T-90 is a limited production tank currently undergoing real world battle testing. Any lessons learned will go into the T-14 family of vehicles.

Meanwhile, the US is falling so far behind in both tank and plane design that it will likely - at some point - be buying Russian made gear out of necessity.

Someone is likely to say that DJT will change that, but right now he cannot win the General, and even then there is such a horrible education system in the US that any future weapon designers will arrive on H1Vs - while Millennials flaunt their degrees in feminist studies and practice being CEOs in their parents basements.

Isn’t the tank more or less at an evolutionary dead end? Unless some radical weapons, armor, or propulsion technology comes around, there will be tweaks and upgrades.

As long as there is infantry to support and the need for mobile heavy weapons, I want some tanks around.

An upgraded Russian T-72 is the T-90.

That is ok, Russia is also replacing it’s oldest ICBMs, which are newer than our MM3, with new ones, building new ballistic missile submarines, new missiles, and new warheads while we coast along on our 1980s nuclear hardware. Not to mention we totally surrendered tactical nuclear superiority to Russia.

But they are our friends now... (gag)

Russia did not like the turbine engine they put in the T-80. I found that interesting. Many have been replaced by a diesel engine.

Also, it is note worthy they considered placing a 152MM gun on the new Armata (T-14). I guess for now they've decided to stick with the 125MM. But they have vastly improved projectiles.

But thanks to Obama, it is of little concern to the masses...

We may see a shift to robots with missiles and machine guns (cheaper than a tank) as expendable units to put in front.

The GI Joe PAC-RATs come to mind from the 80s series.

I’m all for remote control armor and robot platforms with some kind of failsafe.

Being trapped in a burning tank is nearly impossible for me to imagine. I wouldn’t wish that on armor crews but a few human ran types will probably be around.

And with all the shinny new mil gear our supplier of the future - we’re going to need something to repel both of the Canadian troops when Ottawa decides to invade.
