Former Jets QB Greg McElroy Says Cam Newton Quit' On Panthers In Super Bowl 50
ESPN ^ | 2/9/16 9:16 PM ET

Former New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy, best remembered for his out-of-nowhere criticism of the team's "corrupt" locker room chemistry after the 2011 season, unloaded Tuesday on a different target -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

McElroy, speaking on SiriusXM Radio, said Newton "quit" on his team for refusing to jump on his own fumble in the fourth quarter of the Panthers' 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. McElroy, retired from football, is an analyst for the SEC Network.

"I have big issues with the way Cam handled himself not only on the field, but in the postgame as well," McElroy said. "If you're going to act like Superman and call yourself Superman, well, you better be able to answer the tough questions. He wasn't able to do so."

"What I have issues with is the way he did not jump on the fumble after he dropped the ball -- and I know he was getting beat up all game -- but he jumped away from the ball when the ball's on the ground. I have never, not one time in my life, seen a player do that, especially a quarterback. And you know what? His teammates will look at him a little different after that, especially his teammates on the defensive side of the football."

I love Greg. But he is probably still chafing from the time Cam beat him in the Iron Bowl. I am. I try to refrain from talking about Cam because I can’t stand him. Because of the Iron Bowl. Ugh.

Those were some tough guys back in the day. Billy Kilmer was one tough SOB, no doubt. Check out this funny video where he was the first NFL player miked up for sound, and he takes a beating (when he was with the Saints): Billy Kilmer wired for sound in 1967!

Newton injected race into the game before it was even played. Screw him.

Not only did his teammates see him sag and melt under pressure in that game, his opponents did and fed off of it, and the rest of the NFL players who watched it as fans saw it.

He’s toast. My prediction is that he will be a serviceable quarterback, but he will never be great. He is going to get injured, and is always going to have excuses why he isn’t taking the next step. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear him eventually play the race card.

Yeah, Brady was frustrated, but he kept picking himself and fought to the end of the game. You can bet if that had been his fumble, he would have been in there fighting for it.

“Cammy did a quick application of the brakes”

Yes he did because the ball was between his legs which made a dive impossible. He backed up then dived into the pile. Not cowardly just unlucky.

did Cam not try to get his own ball back?

You mean his protective cup failed too?

He reminded me of of a fairy dancing 0 who wanted attention as some kind of hero.

Uh, no. Not at all. Not even close. He was, in fact, running towards it and actually crouched over it, and then he stopped when he saw the OTHER TEAM had a hand on it. Looks like he didn't want to interfere with a successful turnover!

At the time Cammy backed up it looked more likely that a Raven would recover the ball

Thanks, I enjoyed that. Billy Kilmer (Ol’ Fireface) was one of a kind. With that squeaky voice that would get higher the more excited he got. There were bumper stickers here in D.C. that read “I like Sonny” or “I like Billy”. One year before the Dallas away game, the night before the ‘Skins flew to Texas Jurgenson and Kilmer went out and got loaded. Kilmer ended up getting arrested for a dwi, got bailed out and made the flight to Dallas. He then had a career day and beat the Cowboys at home. Couldn’t happen today.

My family moved back to the USA (near Andrews AFB) the year George Allen took over, and I had never seen a football game in my life, not even a high school one, though I had played lots of sandlot football.

As you know, DC was insane with the Redskins, and I got hooked on football. The first game I watched was a Sunday night game against the Bears, where the Redskins blocked a PAT, but the Bears player picked it up and threw it to Dick Butkus laying on his back in the end zone to win the game.

I was hooked! Love the game. Loved watching Kilmer...I was always hoping for Jurgenson, but...he just couldn’t stay healthy!

My favorite Sonny Jurgenson quote,

A lot of the people who say Brady isn't tough don't have a clue.

None at all.

They are motivated to say that by simple

Jealousy,

Envy,

Hatred, and most of all,

Complete blithering ignorance.

He isn't afraid to lay it on the line when the team needs it...heck, sometimes even when they don't need it, he goes all out. He doesn't have an off switch. Check out this one below:

His helmet completely flies off the screen. What you don't see above is that he simply gets up, walks over and straps his helmet back on.
