freerepublic | Feb. 5, 2016 | greeneyes

Posted on 02/05/2016 2:49:23 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings to all. Wonderful 44 degree day with sunshine in Missouri. We have had unseasonably warm temps as well as normal freezing/near freezing temps this week.

I am not feeling well today-seem to have caught a stomach bug from grand kids, but I'll check back in a day or so when I'm feeling better.

Hope you are all doing well. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

I’m starting small planters of spinach, leaf-lettuce, and savory herbs.

Maybe trying some scallions...again...this year. Haven’t had good-luck yet with them. I’ll look to add a higher amount of sand.

Another year Another garden. We got a break in the rain so I pulled up the old diseased Strawberries and dumped them over the hill on Monday. I have 10 dozen new plants waiting for me to prepare a new 12 X 12 bed and plant them. It's hard to get me motivated as I get chilled easily. Lady Bender ordered and our seeds Wednesday morning so she will push me. Here are a few photos of the cleanup and the Daffodils out by the street

It was over 60 here in Northfield Center, halfway between Cleveland and Akron, and my neighbor cut his grass yesterday!

Love, love, love your pictures. Anything growing is good to see. Here in west Michigan it’s the frozen tundra. Just growing indoor sprouts. I’m anxious for spring.

That soil is the result of years of adding compost and old potting soil and dried steer manure. The downer is we are surrounded by fast growing Redwood trees and their roots strip all the goodies out of the soil plus they now shade the garden a hour or two longer. I’m 82 and getting tired physically and mentally but my young bride (75) doesn’t believe me.

We just watched Back to Eden on YouTube and we’re in the process of contacting tree services for chips. I’ll keep everybody updated on how it works!

tubebender, you make me so envious. Your gardens always look to neat and nice. Mine end up looking like something happened in them. My cabbages in the Community Garden did very well and someone liked them also. We did get one cabbage. The mustard greens are still putting out and the kale is just great, no one, but me has harvested them. You have to bend over to pick them. The beets and turnips did beautifully and we shared a lot. The lettuces are still putting out. We’ve spruced up some of the gardens, made some new ones and will be planting soon. We have a pecan tree right in the middle of the garden which was piled high with broken dishware, stones, broken bricks, so we cleaned all that up and will be planting herbs and some flowers at the base. I’m thinking of hanging some pots from the tree and filling them with ?????

Have you tried micro greens? I’m thinking, maybe, but not right now.

Yes results not good. Just not enough sunshine. Sprouts don’t need much at all. I do alfalfa, broccoli and green lentil.

Let me tell you my little secrete to great garden photos. I only take photos of the 10% that looks decent and edit out the messy cluttered weed infested 90%.

Prayers for you, dear greeneyes. Feel better soon.

I need to start some seeds, but I’ve been cleaning out closets. What a trip down memory lane that is..I think that means I haven’t cleaned them all the way to the walls since the nineties...oops.
Also need to do some pruning, harvesting, and fertilizing in the greenhouse. I guess I was hoping the peppers and kale would walk to the kitchen, and hop on the counter.

Anyone here have any experience growing Red Deuce tomatoes?
That’s the 2016 Rodeo Tomato this year. Every year the San Antonio Stock Show has a different tomato that is supposed to do well in this area of Central Texas.

Also curious if anyone has grown HM 8849 tomatoes. The HM stands for Harris Moran.

After two dayys of 50+ weather, we got 6” of thenwhite $hit!

The good news is that I finally mounted the snow thrower on my garden tractor last night and got it working today.

Now starting to plan for our garden this first full year of retirement.

I have some of last year’s sun chokes (aka jerusalem artichokes) in the fridge, washed and ready to eat. They are very tasty whether roasted, fried or in soup (http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/jerusalem_artichoke_soup/ but I don’t bother peeling them and the soup is awesome). Will the remaining ones in the fridge be sproutable/plantable in the spring? They are still firm.

Sorry to hear you’re feeling punky. Hope that turns around. It’s been so nice the last couple of weeks I have gotten some topsoil scraped up and have been sifting the rocks out of it to put it in beds and pots.
