Cruz’s Birthplace Debated: Here’s Where Most US Presidents Were Born

It's no surprise that all 44 presidents were born on U.S. soil: The requirement for a president to be a "natural born citizen" is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. The current debate about what that means stems from the fact that there's no document trail to reveal what, exactly, the Constitution writers meant by that statement.

Whatever your opinion may be, it is true that all of the presidents to date have been born in one of the 50 U.S. states. Live Science took a look at where the presidents were born. While the tally may have a lot to do with chance, the overall trends do reflect changes in the population, politics and attitudes of Americans over the years. I think that, prior to Obama, all the Presidents self-selected based on their own understanding of what the "natural born citizen" clause meant.

A 43-President run should count for something.

It requires magic thinking or subversive intention to conclude that this issue is murky in the eyes of the law.

If that were true, where are the dozens of lawsuits working their way though the court systems challenging Cruz or Rubio eligibility ?

I may be mistaken, but I am unaware of any...

If anyone has standing it would be Trump....he LOVES lawyers and suing people...

We already have a problem, and have had it since ‘08.

0 wasn’t born here, his dad wasn’t a citizen, and his mom was too young to convey citizenship.

—that— is what has opened Pandora’s box.

Sorry I fear even more a president who says one thing in English and another in Spanish.

Agreed, that's why Rubio is way down my list...

He's got very many fine positions and policies on lots of important issues, but this one on illegals, is very troubling...

I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater (yet), because it still might boil down to Rubio verses the criminal or Marxist

-- Was Thomas' mom American/ a US citizen? --

Thomas was born abroad of a citizen father and non-citizen mother. Same as Cruz, except "which parent" was the US citizen in Thomas' case was dad, and in Cruz's case was mom.

I linked the case. Is there some difficulty seeing it on your computer? Should I post the entire text of the case for you?

It feels like someone is chipping away at our sovereignty by compelling us to choose between increasingly questionable candidates. By electing such increasingly questionable candidates, the precedent is set for all time to follow. It’s a bell that can’t be unrung. An openly foreign born President would set a more dangerous precedent than Obama. Little wonder that a unapologetic nationalist like Trump would meet so much resistance from here and abroad.

Closing the door on Cruz might very well open the door for Rubio. A law suit might be ill advised for that reason.

True.

In 2008, we should have had the green party candidate in the oval office since those ahead of him in the vote weren’t eligible. But then rules are only for the little people and some animals are more equal than others. Everybody lies, especially politicians and more so lawyer politicians.

I am crowding 60. It is surreal how long common core has been used in public education... On purpose I might add. I do know of a socialist that use to write history books for K-12...

What is most striking is the number of people who just do not care...

It is as if Cruz has put a hex on people and they will sell themselves out to some guy that has taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, yet demands he be exempted from the Constitution.

A pragmatic answer...

Wait, aren't you the one who thinks Cruz is not eligible?

I agree with you...

“Why was Goldwater eligible and Romney not? Mind you, I have already agreed to that premise in this thread. I am just interested in the legal logic that has brought you to that conclusion. I am, less interested in the Chester Arthur debate as I find it has little to with the present dialectic surrounding Ted Cruz’s eligibility.”

Gaskell Romney allegedly renounced his U.S. citizenship due to the U.S. Government enforcing the law prohibiting Mormon polygamy, and he emigrated to the Mormon colony in Mexico. His father-in-law was responsible for the financial and political connections within the Mexican Government at Mexico City necessary to permit the establishment and maintenance of this Mormon colony. George Romney was born in Mexico. His parents allegedly chose U.S. citizenship for George and his siblings, but that claim appears to be quite dubious. First, George Romney could not acquire naturalized U.S. citizenship on the basis of his father’s citizenship, because his father renounced his U.S. citizenship before emigrating to Mexico. If you exclude the possibility Gaskell Romney renounced his citizenship and expatriated to become a citizen of Mexico, George Romney was still born abroad in Mexico, outside of U.S. jurisdiction. In that case, in accordance with the U.S. Supreme Court statement that a child born abroad can acquire U.S. citizenship only by naturalization, any U.S. citizenship George Romeny was entitled could only be naturalized U.S. citizenship. Since naturalized U.S. citizens are not natural born citizens of the United States, George Romney was an ineligible naturalized U.S. citizen.

The eligibility of Barry Goldwater to be President of the United States was challenged on the basis of the claim he was born in the Territory of Arizona, instead of one of the United States. This challenge was false, due to the fact the U.S. Supreme Court in a number of cases, including the Slaughterhouse cases, determined any person born within the jurisdiction of the United States and its incorporated territories, etc. with two U.S. citizen parents was in fact a U.S. citizen under the Federal Government for Constitutional purposes. Thusly, Arizona born Barry Goldwater was a natural born citizen of the United States with two U.S. citizen parents.

Thomas, born at a US military base in Germany, fathered by a US citizen and serviceman, was NOT a citizen of the US.

The gist of the case was that the plaintiff argued he was a natural born citizen under the 14th Amendment. The court quite rightly ruled he was not. The court also noted that he was not a U.S. citizen at all because his father, while a naturalized citizen, did not meet the requirements defined in 8 U.S. Code Section 1401 to pass natural-born citizenship status to his son.

In Cruz's case his mother did meet the requirements outlined by law - U.S. citizen physically present in the U.S. for at least five years prior to birth, two of which were after she was fourteen - and therefore Cruz is a natural-born citizen. The two cases are not at all similar.

That Pandora’s box has been cracked wide open since 1880, and John McCain and Barak Hussein Obama along with the RNC and DNC agreed to walk themselves right through that crack and disrespect anyone who objected to them doing so.

“Arthur destroyed the evidence before he died, we’ll never know for sure.”

On the contrary, we do know for sure. The evidence proving the case came to light recently, after the 70 year plus waiting period for the release of the census records expired, the records were made available to the public, and someone looked at the records and realized the discrepancies.

Just something to think about....

If all it takes to be a ‘Natural Born Citizen’ is one U.S. citizen parent.... then every “Love Child” fathered by US servicemen around the world qualifies to be President of the U.S.
