New 'Johnny Cash' Tarantula Uproots Spider Family Tree (14 new species found in U.S.)
National Geographic ^ | Feb 4, 2016 | Michael Greshko

A challenging, years-long survey has uncovered 14 new species of U.S. tarantula, including one named after Johnny Cash.

Some, like Aphonopelma madera, live on forested "sky islands," mountains surrounded on all sides by Arizona's deserts. Others, like the tiny Aphonopelma atomicum, nestle themselves in silk-lined burrows near Nevada's nuclear test sites.

And Aphonopelma johnnycashi, named for the legendary country musician, makes its home near Folsom Prison, California.

True to form, adult males are mostly black, a getup of which Cash--the Man in Black--would have no doubt been proud. (Also see "New Tarantula (Not Beetle) Named After John Lennon.")

To uncover the new species, a three-person team led by the Florida Museum of Natural History's Chris Hamilton spent more than a decade on the hunt, logging thousands of miles of travel across the United States, hundreds of hours of laboratory analysis, and fieldwork on remote mountains and in scorching deserts.

"For such a popular organism in our culture, whether it's Hollywood movies or B movies, there's not really much work that's been done on tarantulas," says Hamilton. "Past arachnologists would get really frustrated and give up."

"It's a massive, massive amount of work, but that's what it takes," he says. "There's no easy way around it."

Adorable little things!

Oh btw, was just looking at your page and saw the clan crests for MacKinnon and Lamont. Didn't know you were Scottish. :-D

Scots/Ulster Irish/Welsh/Dane.

The Scots Lamont crest comes from the Irish Red Hand Of Ulster.

Lots of interesting, complex connections twixt the two countries.

Hey, God made me too so I have to question his work ethic at times :) JK

I know everything he makes is beautiful.

He didn’t invent fast food and booze and soda and nice smushy sofas that are more comfortable than exercise machines :)

I'm Italian/Hispanic on my dad's side, and mom's side is English/Scottish/Welsh/French.

Do you ever like listening to old style Scottish and Irish folk music? It is good stuff.

Wonder how many disgusting, scary insects and creatures live in our homes, just out of our sight.

Who knows? But if you want to get rid of the nasty bugs like roaches, beetles and flies, just import some spiders into your house and they will take care of the problem for you. :-)

My snakes have been having a sporadic mite issue for a while, thanks to a poor rescue I brought home but I’m fighting it “locally” rather than just putting up a pest strip, because that would kill ALL the spiders in the house.

Including my beloved kitchen windowsill jumpers.

Can’t do that.

It’s an almost 300 year old log house.

Not even slightly airtight so everything comes in.

That windowsill faces south/west and the jumpers seem to love it.

Possibly because errant flies love it, too.

Hubby has gotten used to the snakes but the last time I grabbed a deli cup to catch a humongous wolf spider that was charging around the room, he looked a bit pale.

;D
