An Issue With the Republican Iowa Caucuses: What were the real vote totals?
Reflection ^ | 3 Feb 16 | Xzins

Posted on 02/03/2016 5:45:03 AM PST by xzins

1. Wikipedia says: "The Iowa Caucus[1] is an electoral event in which residents of the U.S. state of Iowa meet in precinct caucuses in all of Iowa's 1,681 precincts and elect delegates to the corresponding county conventions."

2. Ted Cruz's ground game was said to be massive and the explanation for his victory. He had workers at all precincts.

3. Ted Cruz apologized for his workers spreading misinformation about Ben Carson dropping out of the race. Carson says this misinformation affected vote totals.

4. http://cnsnews.com/news/article/cnsnewscom-staff/iowa-cruz-278-trump-244-rubio-229-carson-93-paul-45

Cruz had 51,416--or 27.7 percent--of the votes.

Trump was second with 45,245 or 24.3 percent of the votes.

Rubio was third with 42,863 or 23.1 percent of the votes.

Dr. Ben Carson was fourth with 17,321 or 9.3 percent of the votes.

5. If each precinct has a caucus and there are 1681 precincts, as stated by point #1, then one vote lost per precinct to the misinformation campaign totaled 1681 votes possibly added to Cruz's total.

6. Since Cruz's lead was only 6200 votes, that would mean only about 4 vote changes per precinct.

7. This calls into question the size of Cruz's victory, the size of Carson's loss, and the number of delegates apportioned.

8. Question: Should that be acknowledge by the Republican Party in a public news release?

CRuz acknowledged that his campaign sent out a report of what CNN was publicly reporting.

(And it is a report borne out by the fact that CArson’s campaign website lists no events. He has no NH staff any more; they all quit to join Cruz’s campaign.)

What is wrong with that?

The presumption of this 'Cruz cheated meme' is that Carson supporters are such mindless robots that they can be conned out of their votes by the first fast-talking Cruz supporter they meet. Didn't the Carson supporters have their own smartphones? If you walk into caucus as a gung-ho Carson supporter ...

Seasoned salespeople do this for a living every day, and they make a living at it. Using disinformation is die genius and especially egregious for someone who professes to be a Christian, which is what I think upset Dr. Carson the most about Senator Cruz, and ostensibly why Cruz apologized.

I heard it on TV early that Carson had dropped out and was preparing a speech and going home. Not sure if it was CNN or FOX.

There is a now-deleted tweet by someone on Cruz’s team, saying that the Carson team in NH had confirmed that Carson was planning to quit. The NH team had left Carson’s team on Sunday (IIRC) to join the Cruz team - and it’s highly possible that they did so, while still highly respecting Carson, because Carson had told them that he was going to drop out.

If that tweet is genuine, it may well be that Cruz’s campaign confirmed the report with Carson’s workers that had just left Carson’s team the day before. That would explain why the Cruz team responded to newgeezer (a speaker on behalf of Cruz at the caucus who didn’t see the emails until after the caucus and who then asked the campaign what was going on) that there was more going on to the story. It would explain why they said in their email that Carson would have a major announcement in the next week, and why when asked what that “major announcement” comment was about they wouldn’t comment/reveal their sources.

In any event, what CNN reported was that Carson was not going to NH or SC - and CNN speculated that EVERYBODY knows that if you don’t go to NH or SC you must be shutting down. Carson’s campaign website has no campaign events scheduled, anywhere. The campaign was suspended to deal with the death of one of the IA workers and had never started back up again and the website shows no plans to ever start back up again.

What Cruz said was “fair game” was letting his people know about the CNN report. Are you claiming that campaigns can’t report the news to their own workers?

Jake Tapper said that the info in the CNN report came directly from Carson. If he didn’t want anybody knowing this information he should not have spoken to CNN.

Give me the quote where Cruz lied. To be a lie it has to be factually incorrect and he had to know it was factually incorrect.

Cruz got the most delegates in Iowa.

He would have still gotten the most delegates in Iowa, if he hadn’t lied about Carson.

But Cruz is still a sleazeball and a liar. Some people don’t care they will support him anyways and they will deserve what they get.

Trump still has the support to win this, he needs to move on from Iowa and focus on winning.

The reality of Trump’s statement is to diminish the Iowa victory by Cruz. That’s smart for the most part so long as he doesn’t overplay it. There are some facts to back that up, so it’s fair to try to score a few points with it.

For example, I don’t think Carolina played near the opponent that Denver did in their lopsided victory in the NFC championship.

(Does that mean I’m saying Carolina is no good? No. But it could be part of a psychological game that teams play. Actually, I think Carolina will win. But, whatever. :>)

It wasn’t a deplorable lie. It wasn’t even a lie. CNN reported that Carson was not going to NH or SC, and the event schedule on Carson’s campaign website shows no campaign events anywhere. Cruz’s team told their precinct people that CNN had reported that Carson wouldn’t be campaigning after IA.

What did he say that wasn’t true?

To be truthful, given the lack of events on Carson’s campaign schedule (He is NOT campaigning anywhere, just like he told CNN), I don’t think anything was a “mistake”. I think Carson talked to CNN because he didn’t care if people knew he would soon throw in the towel but once it come out publicly he changed his mind. Cruz apologized for not reporting the “clarification” (which seems to be a change of mind about letting his plans be public and which came late enough that nothing could likely be done in time to make any difference).

Has Carson been campaigning anywhere this week?

I’m beginning to suspect that Carson’s crew might be refusing to accept Cruz’s apology and making this big stink as a hit job on Cruz. And I’m beginning to wonder who might be putting him up to this. I know that CNN has tried to change the story of what they reported, which can easily be seen as false by comparing their statements with what is on the video of the CNN clip that aired 15 minutes before the caucus started.

Maybe Carson should be apologizing to Cruz. He told CNN one thing (which agreed with what was on his campaign website) but then raked Cruz over the coals when he alerted people to what Carson had told CNN.

Quote to me the exact words of Cruz that were a lie. To be a lie it has to be factually untrue and he had to know it was untrue.

Congressman King, cherry picked 1 of 3 Tweets by a CNN journalist I think, which set the whole damn, deplorable lie in motion.

I saw all three Tweets on TV.

Ted Cruz had no idea about the lie.

Cruz’s campaign sent emails to their precinct people before Steve King did anything on Twitter. It was based on a clip that aired on CNN. That video can be seen at https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1085531334800368&id=100000305365400&_rdr

(or I’m told it’s also at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBfEfKZ6rBk if you don’t want to go on FB)

In that clip, which Jake Tapper said was based on information directly from Carson), they said (accurately, based on Carson’s campaign website events list) that Carson would not be going to NH or SC. They said that everybody knows that a person who doesn’t go to NH or SC is giving up.

The Cruz campaign sent out emails to their precinct people saying that the media was reporting that Carson was not going to campaign in NH and SC, and Carson’s supporters should know.

Is CNN the body of Christ? They accurately reported that Carson was not going to campaign in NH and SC, and Cruz’s team passed on that information to his precinct leaders. Carson knew this would be reported; he was the source of the CNN report.

You said, “He’s a liar and his supporters are liars”

Give me the quote of Cruz’s “lie”. To be a lie it has to be factually incorrect and the person has to know it’s factually incorrect.

To accuse somebody of lying is bearing false witness if it’s not true.
