Trump clearly had the votes to win Iowa but he didn't put the boots on the ground to get out the vote. Cruz had an epic ground game with 10,000 volunteers, data analytics, SUPER PACS, etc. It's amazing that Trump still came within a few percentage points on a shoestring operation. That's to Trump's credit but he still lost.
The Cruz campaign's pollster said Trump's numbers in the public polls were buoyed by a group of voters who do not typically vote in the caucuses but were strongly attached to Trump. These unlikely regular caucus voters needed a push. Trump did not have the infrastructure.
The depressing thing is if Trump didn't want to self-fund tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure comparable to Cruz, all he really had to do was ask. He could have easily asked for small dollar donations at his website. Asking his supporters to invest in his campaign and still kept his credibility against Super-PACS and special interests/lobbyists. A $20 donation isn't going to influence him.

I disagree. Brokered convention relies on the delegates from the states, the ones attached to vote totals, voting for your guy after the first ballot. Jeb has spent all of his time and $ on media. No grassroots ground game to get “his” people elected as delegates to state and national convention.
By the way, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Rubio lead this “hidden” race for delegates.
He’s not stupid enough to spend his own money on the campaign. And he really doesn’t have enough money to do the full presidential campaign. Yeah

Trump never said he would bankroll the whole campaign, just the GOP nomination. If Trump wins the nomination, the Republican party then pays for the campaign.

That won’t cut it. If he did that, he would fade fast and be forever damaged by this. He might do that, but I would be surprised.
Generally speaking politicians are loathsome animals, but successful ones do have an amazing talent for taking rejection. Perhaps that is why so many are sociopaths. He is grappling with the first time proof that many people dislike him in a way that can hurt him. He is new to this. We’ll see if he has the fortitude to continue.
He should pick up the telephone and talk to Sarah, who has dealt with the gloating hatred of cretins for a very long time, usually with aplomb.

I’ve wondered about this since Trump’s cheapness is legendary. Given his behavior in Iowa, I don’t think he has any intentions of spending the money necessary to run a wire to wire campaign. At least not from his own bank account. He’s in a fix. He wants to maintain his independence from large donors but won’t spend his own $$.
The biggest mistake Trump made was to focus so much on Iowa & dirty himself up in the process. He should of waltz in the last couple weeks like Rubio did. A NH win would take some of the sting away, but Trump may have problem winning SC.

It seems to me Obama raised $1 billion in 2008. But Trump hasn’t tried to do that.
