Sheriff's officials in Orange County [California] on Wednesday were searching for an AR-15 patrol rifle that went missing after a deputy placed it on the trunk of his vehicle and drove away, authorities said.

The deputy, assigned to the Aliso Viejo station, was preparing his equipment before his assigned shift began about 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the Orange County [California] Sheriff's Department.

The rifle was described by officials as a black, semi-automatic, .223-caliber Colt AR-15 with a 20-inch barrel and serial No. A0091856. It was inside its black case with three loaded magazines when the deputy placed it on the trunk, the news release said, adding that he "became distracted and drove off before securing it inside his vehicle."

About 3:15 a.m., he realized the weapon was unaccounted for and a search was launched, the Sheriff's Department said.

What B.S. ‘crime’ would any serf be charged with upon doing the same? ‘Involuntary weapons transfer’

I mean, I know they got a ‘law’ to cover walking w/ one lace untied (what was it in Oregon? ‘Impeding an officials job’ or some crap?), they gotta have 1/2 book just for this kind of situation. /I wish

I drove off with a fast food order on the top of my car once. Didn’t notice until the milkshake splashed down the driver’s side window.

That’s kind of the same thing isn’t it?

Wait a minute. In plain lauguage, are they saying a Deputy placed his rifle on top of the trunk of his car, ‘forgot’ it was up there and drove off w/o a care?
Holy Camolie! This may not be the job he was meant to be doing then.

Few years ago, some guy in Michigan drove off with his baby in a car seat on his roof. Hit the freeway and baby bounced off, rolled a few times. Horrified, he stops and jumps out. The baby had nothing but a minor cut on his forehead.

And perpetual anything he ever wants for Christmas.

No cop that I know carries an AR-15 as a service weapon....they are M-4’s. Selective fire.

A photo provided by the Orange County Sheriff's Department shows a rifle similar to an AR-15 that went missing overnight on Jan. 26, 2016, officials said.

Were they fired for that? They should be. Everyone makes mistakes. losing a weapon, however, is a mistake they are not allowed to make.

If I left one of my NFA weapons in my car unattended and it got stolen, the ATF would crucify me.

I seem to remember some DEA or ATF type that had a near-arsenal in their Suburban and had it ripped off.

We're talking full-autos, ammo, encrypted radio systems, night vision stuff, you name it.

It happens.

And probably more frequently than we commoners are told about.

When I was in the USAF Security Police I had a supervisor in 1983, a buck sergeant, who forgot his M-16, with a 30-round magazine inserted, left it back at the guardhouse at the alert fighter-interceptor area way on the other side of the airfield after our shift was over. We had driven several miles back to the armory when he realized his mistake. He was later caught for doing drugs and discharged.
