I grew up near Oakland, graduated from HS in '72.
In college, I lived in dorms that housed our athletes. R&B and soul were the usual fare, such as the Spinners and the Whispers. I had a few albums, Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Doobie Brothers, etc.
After college, the Army sent me to Germany. A good friend was a freak for Southern Rock, mostly Marshall Tucker, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Another friend was into jazz, where I latched onto Spyrogyra and George Benson.
Then I heard Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" for the first time...wow!!!
I've told my kids to play my IPod at my wake, most will be surprised at the songs and groups I favored. lol
Went to Sun Studio during a quick trip to Memphis two years ago. My son and I took the tour, and he really paid attention.
Two weeks later in drama class, his teacher's talking about how Elvis wrote Blue Suede Shoes. My son immediately corrected her...it was Carl Perkins. She finally went to the internet to confirm that he was right.
I had great times in Germany. Thanks to a temporary assignment near Kiel, I made quite a few friends up North. I'd head up there to party several times my last two years there. From my apartment it was over 400 miles...thanks to the autobahn, it was only a five hour drive. I had the stereo cranked up while cruising at 100 MPH.
