Academy President Pledges ‘Big Changes’ to Fix White Oscars Problem

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said Monday she was “heartbroken” after the organization behind the Academy Awards nominated exclusively white actors in top acting acting categories for a second straight year, and vowed “big changes” were in store to combat what some critics call a major diversity problem at Hollywood’s biggest night.

They need changes. The Oscars have had well identified, and rather boring, tendencies for a long time. Tendencies which frequently cause them to miss the best pictures and performances by a mile. Focusing on color and gender probably won’t help, but at least they’ll be making new and different mistakes which actually might render the proceedings somewhat interesting for a few years.

There was a time when they split the cinematography category and maybe some others into black and white and color but that ended when color movies became dominant.

You do when they pan the crowd. It’s the Hollywood elites that do the voting. Nominations are done “within category”
(ie the directors guild puts together the director nominations) but winners are voted for at large.
