The two most pressing problems in Brazil are (1) political corruption, and (2) violent crime.

Sounds like Chicago.

There are too many events, they need to get it back down to the events they had in the 72 or 76 Games.

Socialist governments, including our own, are no longer capable of executing traditional government functions. They can only do one thing: redistribute wealth.

just wait til the water events.. rowing should be fun.. between debris and a nasty water environment,, watercraft may dissolve before our very eyes... unlike China, at least we will be able to see it happen. :-)

Other than prestige, I don’t see what’s in it for the Olympic host city. With the notable exception of Salt Lake City, the Olympics is typically a big boondoggle that saddles a city with debt for decades.

For a developing country still struggling to deliver basic services and infrastructure what a waste throwing tens of billions US $ to host two glorified parties; World Cup and Olympics

You're missing the upside, at least for government officials. The games will open up many opportunities for bribes and kickbacks.

Eventually the Olympics will be spread out between several cities.

I went to Munich in the mid 70s. The Olympic grounds there were deserted except for the dorms they had converted to apartments and were trying to rent.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, they’ve torn down the Omni (Volleyball), the Atlanta stadium (baseball) and are getting ready to tear down the Georgia Dome (basketball, team handball, and gymnastics) and the Olympic stadium (partially demolished shortly after the game; the remaining portion used for pro baseball, but now slated for the wrecking ball).

So, perhaps the Greeks are just moving a little faster in discarding things.

As of early December, a record 1.58 million cases of dengue fever were reported in Brazil in 2015.

Dang! That'sa lot.

Including the target shooting exhibition from the '72 games?

A coworker has been to Rio a few times...and he was astonished they would host an Olympics there. He characterizes the city as being right on the edge of the rain forest, and apparently the mosquito related illnesses are a constant issue.

I’m old enough to remeber when the Elites told me BRIC was going to kick our asses.

“and yet in the end, everything works out”

At Sochi, the Ruskies got everything finished and ready to go around a week after the opening ceremonies...so it sort of worked out.

A ballooning budget in the wake of a national economic crisis

It seems that wherever the Olympics go, it bankrupts the country - ask the Greeks, and keep in mind that the International Olympic Committee(IOC) is a private corporation with the members and officers receiving handsome salaries. Are they Bilderbergers?

That's news? Anyone who's listened to ESPN Radio's Mike & Mike radio show within the last seven months know they've been harping on the VERY poor water quality problems with the open water areas planned for sailing, rowing, and open water swimming events.

Thanks. I considered the fact that it may have been poorly worded but then again, who knows. Considering how much our government spends on improving other countries, rather than on our own infrastructure and things that would provide jobs in the U.S., would not surprise me at all if we pay for the subway in Rio.

the home cooking displayed at the last Canadian Olympics and you want them to host it all the time?....no thx...

its a boondoggle...

I knew from that first extravaganza in 84' that the Olympics were going in the wrong direction...

its not amateurs anymore...the husky baker from some little town in Siberia trying for the heavy weight lifting gold medal...

its lost its meaning...its lost its innocence...
