I don’t have direct experience with them - I’m not from NY and my daughter isn’t old enough to have taken them yet - but my understanding is that for a while they were getting easier - they had to if they were going to make everyone get a regents diploma - but the idiotic way NY has introduced Common Core has made a hash of things, and I think that affects the regents exams right now.

So then just what is the value of a diploma from a California school system? That of a “Participant” trophy?

Who said they participated?       :)

From the bill digest: “and has met all applicable graduation requirements other than the passage of the high school exit examination.”

In other word the exit exam is more a reflection on the school system than on the student.

No, the Regents is NOT "required" of everyone and it is now SO degraded, anyway, that it's extremely easy to pass.

What IS required of everyone, is the COMMIE CORE tests for every grade.

Years ago I was visiting my worthless brother-in-law (If you know him he probably owes you money).

Suddenly in the door came storming in the B-I-L’s more worthless Son-in-Law! I swear I saw a large “L” appear above his head! My wife later said she saw the same thing!

Fifteen years later and a few years living on Hi-way 14 (NM Prison) in New Mexico he disappeared from their life.

I am from NYC and the Regents of yore was EXTREMELY difficult and extensive; however, in recent years it has been made “easier” and “easier”; sadly.

Well, I'm an English teacher in Los Angeles and I can tell you this: if we held to any standards like the ones that existed back in the 70s in the Midwest when I was a kid, most of the public school population of L.A. would bottlneck at the 3rd grade.

Of the 33 (on average) kids I have in each class, about 4 are sentient, alert creatures who read near grade level and can understand anything beyond the simplest sentences. I'm sorry, but it's true. If California adhered to any real standards, the graduation rate would be about 12%. Tops.

High school is fairly worthless for many. The facts you can learn on your own. It is nice to have good instructors and teachers for math, science, writing, even art. If you get a golden teacher he or she can change your life.

But mostly high school depletes a kid’s health (be there at 7 when the kid’s internal clock plus homework don’t let him get to bed before midnight, and he is still growing so needs 8-10 hours sleep for health) and is a total waste of time with all the non learning part. You can in the state of CA give up on high school and go to community college with no diploma. Once you get your AA you can transfer to any school that will have you and no one will ever care that you didn’t finish high school.

They are now: https://www.hesc.ny.gov/prepare-for-college/your-high-school-path-to-college/regents-requirements.html

To wit:
There are two levels of diploma for graduating high school in New York State.

Regents Diploma Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation

Each requires certain classes and exams.

This makes it clear California has no interest in employing US citizens. Why get a Californian kid with a California diploma when you can get an Indian with a BS degree for less money.

Good point. I think in the bulk of the bill these students had to complete the curriculum, but “participant” diplomas will probably be handed out eventually without the benefit of participating.

Why stop there? How about doing away with exams for drivers’ licenses? And give them retroactively to anyone who failed the exams since 2004? Same goes for certification for engineers and lawyers. Just give it out to anyone who wants to work in those fields. Qualifying anyone is discriminatory.

High schools didn’t have “exit exams” in my day. They simply never passed someone on if they didn’t pass their classes in the first place.
