One other comment. Harrison Ford plays his part incredibly well. He is still sarcastic and likable, but plays it as more wiser.

Carrie Fisher's voice sounds like that of a great grandmother, and she looks and feels incredibly uncomfortable acting in this movie. In the 1977 movie, her first lines have a British accent (she said she was intimidated by Peter Ustinov and Alec Guinness and tried to make a good impression early on). Later in the movie, she has an American accent.

It is almost like a completely different person is in front of the camera. Ford has aged, and his voice is a bit gravely, but he comes across as an older Han Solo. Carrie Fisher's voice, look, and acting is just..........out there.

Star Wars is a Western based on a samurai movie (The Hidden Fortress) that was in turn based on Hollywood horse operas.

The villian is also 100 times better than Hayden Christensen. He plays the "conflicted" role well without being a petty whiner.

I got the Spaceballs vibe from the new villain, and kept suppressing a grin every time I saw him without his helmet. Darth Vader wore one to conceal his hideous disfigurement and perhaps to deal with breathing difficulties from his past injuries via some kind of hookup to a gizmo panel mounted on his chest. Why does this new villain wear the helmet?

I think John Ford’s “The Searchers” can stand up to any of them. Kraut playing and indian notwithstanding.

It’s a movie, if you like movies then probably you’ll enjoy the movie. If you don’t like movie’s don’t go.

if one has read the Star Wars books don’t expect the movie to resemble them.

thanks for the post. the reviewer looked at the movie the way I look at ‘em (which is why i no longer go to see movies: they’re utter crap now).

Even fantasy and science fiction movies require a certain amount of internal consistency to make them worth the effort to suspend disbelief, and this one sounds like it’s a horrible mess, especially since it’s just a retread of the very first Star Wars movie anyway. As one commenter said: “The Force Awakens” is to “A New Hope” as “Prometheus” is to “Alien”. Alien was great and Prometheus was a P.O.S.

I might bother to see this when it comes on Netflix, or maybe not. I don’t think I ever bothered to watch the last Star Wars movie because the next to last one was so awful.

I actually might never go see a new movie again anyway: I’ve gotten horribly spoiled on high-quality streaming like Midsomer Murders, Sherlock, Doc Martin, etc., as well as the occasionally brilliant American TV series like “Fargo”. Even “Walking Dead”, god help me, is more entertaining than new Hollywood movies.

Why does everything JJ Abrams ‘reboots’ turn to crap?

1. I don't understand Starkiller Base. Is it a laser weapon or a hyperspace weapon? If it's a laser weapon, and lasers travel at the speed of light, wouldn't it take several years to reach another system? And how would they see the laser from another system instantly? And why do Star Wars bad guys keep making super-weapons that have glaring weak spots? Seems like they would win a lot more if they dumped their Sith Lords and picked up a few good architects and engineers.

2. Everyone wants Rey to be a Skywalker. That would be a horrible idea. Why do force users keep abandoning their children? I think a GREAT idea would be to make her the grand-daughter or daughter (its possible) of Palpatine. Makes sense if it turns out Jakku was one of the last stands of the Empire.

3. Why does Artoo conveniently wake up with the map at the end? That makes no sense whatsoever.

4. Why are the Resistance and the Republic two different entities? I thought the whole reason for the Rebellion was to restore the Republic.

5. The ability to hyperspace BEHIND shields?? That's just laziness on Jar Jar Abrams part.

"Oh, and, Han Solo dies!"

Which tells me that it doesn't follow the written set of canon books that have been published concerning the Star Wars series. I've read a good many of them .. before the number of characters became so overwhelming that I couldn't keep track .. and Han Solo and Leah Organa were married with several children, and Han Solo died in none of them (at least to the point where I stopped reading the series).

Saw it today with my son and daughter in 2D. I was expecting 8/10 or 9/10. I give it 6.5/10. Kids loved it but it wasn’t hokey like the prequels. Empire Strikes back is still the best. I’ll probably go again with my wife when we have access to a baby sitter and see it in 70mm 3D IMAX in nearby Branson, MO.

Gone With The Wind, Star Wars, Ten Commandments, were all good.

I thought Dr. Zhivago was better than any of them. I think I am the only person in the world who hated The ET.

John Wayne’s greatest movie was Red River and he thought so too. Next imo was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
