I totally believe this, judging from myself and my own family (2 sons, 2 daughters). And women do use landmarks, as suggested in the comments. I find it somewhat disorenting when everything is suddenly covered in snow and have been known to turn on the wrong road when heading home in a blizzard, or deep fog, even though I’ve lived here 30 years.

I’ve only seen that in movies and on TV. I hate being lost, and take whatever measures are required to orient myself.
