ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. () Police in Florida busted a game of mahjong in Florida at a condominium clubhouse. The group accused of the crime: four women between the ages of 87 and 95.

King says word spread about their weekly gathering and that a "troublemaker" in the community called the police citing a law that prohibits playing the game for money. Police closed the clubhouse.

After a bit of investigating, officials came to the conclusion that there is no ordinance prohibiting mahjong gambling of that nature.

Can’t argue with that. But, is it the excessive number of laws that creates an irresponsible public, or is it an irresponsible public that results in an excessive number of laws?

I subscribe to the adage of he who governs least, governs best. The ruling class shows its distrust of the people when it piles on laws meant to control them rather than free them.

The nation survived very well without the EPA, DOE, DHS and others.

Smaller government, with much fewer regulations and laws, opens up wider opportunities for growth and freedom. I thought that was always apparent to the conservative mind.

What idiot would think a mahjong game played by some elderly women constitutes illegal activity?

The women were sent a formal notice from condominium management stating that there would be no more mahjong, bingo, or poker played in the location until further notice. Police reportedly stopped by several times later that week to make sure the games weren't being played.

So thanks to the vigilance of an alert citizen and a responsible police force, criminal activity has been brought to a halt. You are obviously pleased.

Irresponsible public? That's a phrase you don't see very often on FR.

That’s an excellent point. I hope someday we live in a nation where contractor’s can be reported for using illegal labor and somebody actually comes and investigates.

Irresponsible public.

Nice phrase.

Who decides who is irresponsible?

And, I wonder, why is it laws are rarely enforced uniformly? Some folks break laws with impunity while others are forced into prison for many years.

0bamao breaks the laws and brags of it, yet old ladies play Mahjong for $4 pots and get rousted. If there is any reason why it seems laws are being ignored by a growing segment of the population, we have only our "leaders" to look to for blame. Illegals get free passes while those same municipal leaders would have a jaywalker tazed and their dog shot for not obeying "the law". Government aparatchiks get "qualified immunities" and the regular Jow gets his azz kicked for something mundane.

Our nation is sick. Nothing short of a new revolt will cure it.

Tell me, why did the “officers friendly” not check whether there was a law being broken BEFORE harassing these ladies?

They wonder why they are losing the public’s confidence, while they pull idiotic stunts like this.

Copsuckers with “they were only doing their job/ responding to a complaint” comments in 5...4...3...

But when they caught Trayvon Martin with the loot from a residential burglary, there was no arrest.

We are all grateful that Florida has the correct priorities in law enforcement.

The someone that reported them is going to be missing the tennis balls on her walker. (I live in Sun City, I understand senior retribution!)
