More Arabic speaking tutors needed at AISD
KEYE TV ^ | 11/19/2015 | KEYETV

A University of Texas graduate student is calling for more Arabic speaking tutors to help an influx of refugees from Iraq and Syria at Austin Independent School District.

Dana El Kurd volunteers twice a week at Anderson High School and said the students she helps are struggling to adjust to a new culture and language.

"There are students who have been in refugee camps for five or six years waiting for this kind of official permission," El Kurd said.

Part of the problem she said is that the majority of the classes the refugee students attend are in English. "Nobody speaks Arabic and a lot of them are kind of lost," El Kurd said.

Many consider dropping out because of the lack of support and on top of that, El Kurd said refugee students report they are also being bullied. "I don't think that a lot of their peers know where they are coming from so they are calling them things like ISIS and these people are escaping ISIS so it's very difficult for them," she said.

El Kurd said more volunteers would help the students adjust and be successful at school but she hopes the district will beef up support as more Syrian refugees will be settled in Texas in the coming years. "There is a humanitarian need and we need to address it," she said.

This doesn’t make much sense. They have been in a camp for five or six years, but never had time to learn English.

There is a disconnect here.

Too busy digging up micro-aggressions for BLM.

With both parties pushing amnesty, that sarc tag may not be needed.

True, and besides, ESL (espanol) is fully funded in Texas public screwels. Teach those lil’ jihadis some messican. They can always get work with one of the cartels to fund their bomb making.

Guess they waited to come here so taxpayers could pay for more ESL classes. Plus, the parents have no plans to assimilate.

It’s not the school district’s fault that those children are in their schools. The Arabic-speaking students need teachers to teach them English.

Been in the camps 5-6 years but they still don’t understand English? And they don’t have jobs? IOW, they’re moochers who have no intention of assimilating into the American culture but have every intention of bilking us for every dime they can for generations to come.

Put them back two or three grades. That is what used to happen with the non English speaking immigrant children of the past.

I had a really old Lebanese friend - she passed away at 100 several years ago - who was put back two grades and did not suffer for it. Later became a school teacher.

An older friend from Norway was put back a year and later became a very successful and wealthy salesman and business owner.

The more the kids are coddled, the less able they will be to achieve.

Two words: immersion training. It works.

I took two six week immersion classes midway through my tour in Germany (didn't have the time my first two years, although I picked some up while living off base).

That was followed with a 3 month TDY at a German anti-aircraft training base. After our first meeting, the base commander told me "you can ditch the interpreter."

It was just about the best summer of my life. We were the only Americans for 200 miles, and the resort town near the base was a target rich environment. I made so many friends there, I went back several times, even though it was 400 miles from my regular duty station.

I don't get it...you're in a refugee camp for five years, and you don't learn anything?

Saudi Arabia Court Sentences Poet to Death for Renouncing Islam

by Mary Chastain20 Nov 201517
A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a poet to death for apostasy, the abandonment of Islam.

Ashraf Fayadh, 35, received his sentence without any legal representation. He has 30 days to appeal. Human Rights Watch Middle East researcher Adam Coogle examined the court documents.

“The trial records in this case indicate clear due process violations, including charges that do not resemble recognisable crimes and lack of access to legal assistance,” he declared.

In May 2014, a court sentenced him to four years in prison and 800 lashes. He appealed, which was dismissed. Instead, the court retried him with a new panel of judges.

If we didn’t keeping them in it wouldn’t be a problem. And if parents want to move their family here legally, they should be responsible and hire an English tutor for their children before sending them to school here and have the taxpayers pay for it. Notice I said legally.

Put them back a couple of years? No problem...that’s standard practice in Southlake. Our middle school teams compete against the equivalent of freshman and sophomore players. Not that big a deal in basketball, but we’re outmatched in football.

Good grief, It’s been nearly a year since I’ve been in Austin proper but was there yesterday. Thought I was in a communist country. It has always been uber liberal but they’ve sunk so low I don’t even recognize it as America. Dark, dank offices that you have to have escorts everywhere and every door is locked. Parking backashwards. One way streets with backward angled parking. Bumper to bumper traffic no where near rush hour. Bad vibes from everyone. Weird freaky vibes all the way around. It used to be ok for shopping but as of yesterday, even that is off my list. The tree hugging LGBTWHATEVERS can keep it. I’m not setting foot back there.

When I was in sixth grade we got a girl in our class that was several years older ans did not speak English. The teacher had me help her as I always made good grades. I ended up helping her for three years, we became good friends, she learned English and I learned Spanish.
